The furniture factory is getting nearer to finished, about time in my opinion ! The inside has had some modifications so that it forms individual levels, which in turn support the roof.

Now, one question, do I model the building with some of the roller doors up, or all down...??
Please keep in mind that I haven't built any interior detail...

    Cheers, Gary.

One thing is in a lot of places the roller doors would only be open when a car was being loaded at that door and if it was a box car you wouldn't see the open door as it would be covered by the car in front

If you do a open door you could make a wall of boxes ready to ship thus blocking the view of the empty shell behind:thumbs:

Excellent idea Chris. A stack of new timber could be the go. ;)

I mentioned in post 101 that I had built levels into the furniture factory to form floors and to support the roof. Here is a pic from the back of the building showing what I have done. I used 3mm form board for the lateral walls and floor. The roof is still waiting some roof top details.

Todays priority (whilst watching the F1 coverage) will be to relocate the signal box. 'This bare area is was I intended it to be...

This is where it will be relocated to...

Basically, it is diagonally opposite the crossing at the front of the layout.

    Why you may ask ??

Simples. I didn't like the way the road stopped at the back scene and I will be curving the road up the slight embankment to the left.

    Like this...

Plenty of scrub will hide the road disappearing into the back scene. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

Managed to get the amendments to the layout 1/2 complete today during the F1 telecast.

So, it was out with the old and a clean sheet (baseboard) prepared.

The road way was cut from 3mm foam board, supported with wedges of foam board underneath. The pencil line shows where the scenery will be incorporated onto the sloping roadway.

Styrofoam was glued into place with No Nails and shaped accordingly. This was then followed by a lick of paint. The roadway was painted grey as well. The gaps between the existing road and the new foam board was filled in with modelling clay. Modelling clay was also used to repair some of the damaged corners/edges of the baseboard and to form a mound along the rear of the road way.

Eventually scenics were added, starting with dusting the painted foam with soil. Placement of some stones (rocky out crops) to vary the landscape a little and also added to form a road barrier. Static grass was applied, using three or four varieties and colour. Once this had firmed up, the weeds and small shrubs/brambles were added.

A view from the other direction.

I have to knock up a few trees (maybe purchase a few pines) to help disguise the disappearing road. These will be placed along the embankment and the small corner besides the storage shed.

Next up will be the area around the furniture factory car park and where the signal box now sits.

    Cheers, Gary.

    G`day Gary,

    That`s coming along very nicely..

Getting back to the roller doors. Can you still access the inside from the back?????.....because you could fit a downloaded factory interior pic to be seen through the roller door.

    Just a thought.:scratchchin:

I can at the moment, but once the back scene goes up... I had thought about this option...

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi Gary,

I take on board what Chris said about the doors being hidden by boxcars. A very valid point but I think I'd still like to see at least one open just to add a bit of variation to the building. I know it'll be a lot more work as it takes you inside the building but I think it would be worth it. A load of boxes, crates or timber to hide the interior or as Gormo suggests, a downloadable interior back scene.

I like the efenics as always. A fantastic job done there. :worship:

Before I go on any further with the scenics, I had to knock up the back scene boards. A trip down to Bunnings was called for where I had a sheet of 3mm MDF cut to size, apart from the smaller end sections. These end sections were cut at home, as I didn't bother measuring the width of the layout.
Whilst I was there, I picked up some spray paints and a few paint brushes. :scratchchin:

I was intending to cover the back boards with the 'overcast sky' I made up using the 'Gormo' method (http://www.platform1mrc.com/view_topic.php?id=1046&forum_id=67). The overcast sky looked good until I test printed the first 2 pages. Unfortunately, I could see all these small fine rectangles throughout the print. No good...

My second option was to visit Officeworks and have the back scene printed. Well, that would cost close to the same price as purchasing a backscene form ID Backscenes...:whatever:

My third option was to create my own backscene... ;);)

So option 3 is what I chose to do. Once I got home, I measured up the end boards and cut them to size, then cut the opening to the fiddle yard. The squiggly lines at the base is the area that will be hidden by the baseboard and framing, approximately 50mm. This gives me a 250mm high back scene.

This was then followed by a coat of white paint, which happens to be a primer and top coat all in one. This certainly speeds up the processes.

    Now for some clouds...

I tore up an old catalogue from the junk mail bin and made some cloud shapes.

These torn papers covered the whole back board and then I sprayed the torn open sections with some black spray paint that I had. This is to form the 'grey' shadowing that appears below the clouds.

Once this had dried, I covered the whole lot in light blue spray paint. I gave the top of the baseboard more colour and allowed the bottom to be a little more faded. You can see the black underneath the blue. The blue does look quite heavy, but it will be faded down some what.

Next step was to spray white paint to form some clouds. I done this whilst the blue paint was still slightly wet. Although in the pic below the paint looks rough, a few more swipes with both the blue and white aerosol paints made a difference. The black here didn't look the best so I may just get out the airbrush at a later date and spray some grey tones under the clouds to represent the shadows. Maybe even a touch of soft yellow to create the sun light on the cloud edges/faces.

Being 6' long and I couldn't get it all in the one frame so I chose to take a panoramic shot of the back scene, hence the strange curvature !

Overall I'm quite pleased with the outcome.

Next up will be the lower tree line and distant hills. Now you know why I posted the thread on Painting Back Scenes (http://www.platform1mrc.com/view_topic.php?id=1678&forum_id=14) .... ;);)

    Cheers, Gary.

I had a few hours up me sleeve today so I decided to roll up the sleeves and get some paint out...

Well, I don't have any 'Mars Black', nor 'Primary Yellow' in reserves, but I do have Paynes Grey and Warm Yellow. Mars black is a blue based black and I thought that Paynes Grey, being a very darkblue/grey, could do the trick for painting a backscene, mixing it with the warm yellow. Occasionally, I dabbled with a little bit of white for highlights and a dash of black for shadowing...

After watching the backscene tutorial video (posted earlier - http://www.platform1mrc.com/view_topic.php?id=1678&forum_id=14), I got stuck into 'having a go' at painting the distant hills etc...

This is the results after about 2 hours...

As can be seen above, the paint is still wet when placed behind layout for a photo.

The overall effect isn't too bad, but may need a little touching up in the morning.

Once trees and scrub are planted in front, I'm hoping that the backscene will blend in successfully. Maybe some lighter greens at the foreground of the backscene could be added to blend the grasses in and perhaps some foreground trees painted on as well... :scratchchin:

Well, until tomorrow..., who knows !

    Cheers, Gary.

Looks the business Gary I did say the sky was very artistic of you but you have excelled yourself with the landscape painting its better than some of the stuff hanging in the local gallery:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:
