Growing up out in the sticks - Blythe Bridge, I remember PMT, Berresfords Proctors and a few others

Potteries Muck Trucks, were one thing, but at least used to get you there, however a Berresford :whatever:. Normally followed the old adage wait for ages and then there were two, for Berresford one was probably being towed or pushed by the other. :avatar:

A working Berresford bus - definitely a rare beast, and in excellent condition.

There's an ex Southern Gas flat bed FG still in original grey livery at Holme upon Spalding Moor, its taxed for the road but it's a bit rough on the inside, usual rot out on the seam below the corner window glass. Don't be jealous of the Nimbus Pete it can be quite cantankerous at times... but thanks for liking anyway.

Proctors only went out of business a couple of years ago Paul, they were still plodding the old route since 1922, PMT is long gone and Berresfords ceased in 1987 when proprietor Jim Berresford died, the garage site at Windy Arbour on the top of Cheddleton bank is now a leisure centre sports field paid for by Pointon's Ltd. Berresfords ran a Longton to Caverswall service via Blythe Bridge and yes they got a lot of old double decker crates from Stockport Corperation most of them being Leyland, something Jim relished as a quick and cheap source of second hand spares.

My family moved to Leek from Congleton in April 1956, I was a pupil studying at King's School in Macclesfield and for my final term there I travelled daily to Macc via Rudyard and joining the main line at North Rode. Happy days but when living at Congleton I began my 'spotting days' at Crewe, soometime creeping in to the North Sheds...

Hi Beetleton, great to share that memory, I always liked Rudyard station, it had a quaint look and feel about it... what a pity it was knocked down not by the railway but by Staffordshire County Council in 1970 who also demolished Oakamoor and Bosley around the same time, thankfully Rushton survived. Yes I have a particular interest in the old North Stafford system which geographically always kept the Midland from the GWR from feuding and vis versa.

This last few days I have mainly focused on building the ex Southern BY luggage van which will form part of the Mirfield parcels train, the kit is by Slaters and was a simple put together however I've chosen to add quite a bit of under carriage detailing which at times became somewhat monotonous but very rewarding in the end. One thing to note for anyone wanting to make this the instructions do NOT offer a step by step construction walk through, this is down to you to decide where you start, instead the instructions offer self explanatory diagrams covering body, chassis and undercarriage details. So this is where I'm at now, the next move will be to fit the dynamo belt and solder in some fine wire to hold the steam heat bags in the correct position and fit vacuum and steam pipes then it will be airbrush time, hopefully the Gauge O Guild Doncaster Summer Show this Saturday will see me buying the necessary paints needed and transfers from Precision and HMRS traders. So here are a few pictures:-

The internal compartments will be air brushed first, the guards compartment being buff and the luggage areas in bauxite with the inside roof face in white.

The under carriage has been super detailed and will get the usual dirt weathering layers with oil and brake dust colours.

A close up of the brake harnessing some of which has been modified by myself using 0.7mm wire.

Here is the body, once the inside has been decorated the window apertures will be sealed and the outside body painted in Southern Region Stock Green.

Then the glazing and window mesh can be fitted along with the roof and some further weathering take place.

Thanks Toto, this is where I'm going with the weathering on this van... I'm not sure the BR Standard 4 is going to end up looking that filthy tho.:avatar:

That looks excellent Paul, and reminds me that I have a Southern Brake van to finish building so that I can get it up for sale....

A good overall coating of grime should do it, I think the secret is to apply the proper livery first then stain down so it becomes work worn, then apply thin layers of grime and oxide dust. What I want to avoid is disaster where the van looks as if Farmer Giles has come along with his muck spreader and bathed the van in cow poo. :avatar: I've seen some horrendous over the top weathering in the past where people have reduced locos in scrap yard scenes to something akin to nuclear fallout or mass incineration.:facepalm::facepalm:

Thanks Rob, is that the Ministry version of Southern brake van? I note a trader is selling a pre owned LMS six wheel fish van on fleebag for £194 ... I guess it is just waiting for the right person to come along.

    Hi Paul,

Embarrassingly I have no idea. It's a Parkside kit that I am building as a BR example without the sandboxes on the outer platforms. I am sure it's on one of my threads here somewhere. - From Here I got so far and then got distracted by Ian Kirk Gresley bogies.

That's the one Rob... I have vague memories of us discussing how this van style became a version adopted by MoD in their own build spec.

Ah yes, now I remember. I did give serious thought as to building one of the MOD types but since I bought it to build for sale I wondered at the wider appeal of the MOD van as opposed to the more numerous straight Southern version and decided to stick with that. Now that I have become much busier with commissions I am struggling to complete what seemed like a good idea to raise funds at the time. I will be more cautious what I speculate on in the future....

Glad to hear you have good order books for commissions Rob  thing is with these brake van kits they look reasonably straight forward until you come to the build then suddenly there is a heap of work in the undercarriage dept, particularly to make it look right, then there is the internal body furniture and fittings to detail. I have an LMS 20 ton van kit to make at some point and you know what for a plastic kit the box is quite heavy as there is an awful lot of sprues containing fiddly bits.
