I have had this little shunter for a few years now, but I decided to try and improve the look of it [IMG]

I stripped all the old paint off with brake fluid, and resprayed it black, I glazed the windows and removed the moulded hand rails and replaced them with wire, I stuck a pair of early BR logo decals on that I found in the drawer, and I am making the cab interior out of plasticard.

I have got a little further with the control panel than this and I,ve found a driver for it, I,ve had to hack him about a bit to get him to fit but he should look the part, as soon as I get back in the shed I will take some more pic,s.

    Cheers, Pete.

Nice one Pete, one of these may hit the wish list at some time ;), but I suppose I better look for track and a few wagons, Tanygaer and look like we will have a joint thread, pt 1 a 4F then wagons and maybe even a plank. The force from the dark side is strong padawan.

    Hi Pete
Nice job with the rebuild/rebirth of this little one :tophat:

Seeing what you have done with it will keep an eye out on the S/H stalls for one to do a similar mod. thanks for the inspiration

looks like it will make a nice industrial themed shunter.

Ian can you let me Know what it runs like? Is it the same motor (pancake ring-field motor) as other Lima models have?

Yes it is the same pancake motor, probably the same unit fitted to the class 33, it runs OK but it needs the pick ups and treads kept clean luckily its easy to dismantle for cleaning, I tried fitting a DCC chip a while ago but I couldn,t get it to work, it was a second hand untested chip so maybe it was already busted, there is plenty of room under the bonnet for a sound chip, speaker and stay alive, so I may have to start saving!

    Who,s Ian?

    Cheers, Pete :giggle:.

    Thanks Pete for the info
That motor seems to be a universal item I'm going to keep an eye out for one to bash into a industrial shunter.

Sorry for the name slip had just been reading another post by Ian. Oops :giggle:

I have 3 Lima class 33's which I've re-motored with ones bought from a guy in Finland on Ebay UK, costing less than a fiver each, including postage from Finland. They fit easily into the ringfield casing, re-using the circular "magnet" as a spacer, run well on DCC without the Lima 'all-or-nothing' starting speed, and you can obviously restrict top speed by re-programming, as these motors are 5 volt ones which I understand are previously used for the in-out CD drawer on CD players! They come complete with the drive gear already fitted to the motor shaft so it's the work of a few minutes to effect the swap, and then you can actually run a shunter at a realistic slow speed.

Hi Pete, nice conversion, look forward to seeing the cab detailing installed with the driver.

    (Hi Keith,
Do you have the link for the motors as I'm in need of one as well

    Hi Kim.
Not sure how to do a link, but if you go to Ebay UK, it's item number 252337910416, and the guys name is Marko Hakanpaa. Price is £4.49, but post to you in Oz would likely be extra. Mine came with 3 A4 pages of well photographed instructions, although (A)It's hardly 'rocket science', and (B)I'm a retired 'Sparks', so electrics are not a problem to me. All 3 of my Lima conversions now work well, although if you use DC (as opposed to DCC) you would need a suitable resistor in series with the motor as they are 5 volts,- without one the motor would have a short life but a gay one! On DCC, you'd just need to reprogram the decoder to restrict voltage. Hope this is of some help to those with useful but 'hard to control' Lima models.
    Keith.

Whilst not wishing to 'hijack' Pete's thread in any way, I've just given in to temptation(?) and bought a used Lima Class 73 "Brighton Evening Argus" loco with the 'pancake motor', so have ordered the replacement "Susu-motor" I mentioned, from the Finnish guy Marko. When loco and motor arrive, I'll attempt a "How-to" thread on the forum to hopefully show how easy this conversion is. I have a later Hornby Class 73 which runs well without replacing the motor, but I have fitted this one with high intensity front and rear lights (yes, I know these were not fitted until later in life!), so I will probably do the same to this Lima one.

Hi Keith, I,ve been thinking about those replacement motors and I suspect they may not be suitable for O scale Lima,s as the motor is a good 50% larger in the original models.

    Cheers, Pete.

Drat and double drat! I (wrongly) imagined that Lima used the same motor in 0 gauge as in 00.........don't actually know, as I've never seen inside Lima 0 gauge stuff. I had a 'ferkle' around on t'internet to see if I could find any info, came across a topic of a few years back on RM Web discussing similar, and the suggestion was that one or two traders on the Gauge 0 Guild were offering remotoring solutions using a can motor and gear set, but that might cost more than the loco is worth. There's nowt on Ebay along those lines, but have you tried giving the motor a stripdown and a good clean and lubrication? There is a replacement ring magnet on Ebay which is suitable for "all except the G motor" (whatever that is) so if it fits yours it might well give it a new lease of life.

Hi Keith, the motor in mine is fine, I have stripped, cleaned and lubricated the motor and it runs as it was designed to do, unfortunately it was like a scalextric car from new, I tried fitting a DCC chip in it a while ago as apparently it,s supposed to calm them and make the running smoother, however I couldn,t get the chip to programme, it was a used one out of a Hornby Jinty so may not have been any good to start with!

    Pete.
