Hi Andrew I like the idea of using the Thomas tank engine train set. The layout is coming along nicely and I do like your ballasting.
Thanks Bo-Bo. It started out as a board to mount the track to stop carpet and other forms of fluff getting into the locos and has developed from there. Getting a real taste for railway modelling now! Ballasting of the mainline is now complete, next stage is to add the coal/ash ballast to the engine shed & goods yard sidings. I don't have any DAS modelling clay, so I will be using a version of filler that I have got lying around that can be brushed on. This will be painted with a black / grey mix, then a sprinkling of coal dust added. I will ten add deposits of ash that I have stored up from my wood / coal burning stove. Andrew.
I'm making good progress with the ballasting of the engine shed & goods yard. First stage was to apply filler between the sleepers and at the sides, before painting and adding coal dust. I had a practice on a dead piece of track before taking the plunge on the rest..... It didn't look to bad so I have ploughed on. My Dad popped round with some North Staffordshire Oatcakes, which were as tasty as ever! Gave a chance for the filler to dry before painting. In this photo, I have started painting the filler base with a black / grey / brown mix. These raised areas will be covered with ash to replicate the ash deposits from locos.
Coal dust all glued down now. Does look like the real thing, because it's the real thing..... Only problem is it is really dirty work! Next step is to add the ash deposits around the shed & goods yard area. I'm also going to add some puddles, hopefully I will have a chance to do that tomorrow evening. Kind regards Andrew
Thanks Andy. I took my inspiration from model railway magazine articles and Steve Fay's Marches Road Engine Shed, covered in this Platform1mrc thread: https://platform1mrc.com/p1mrc/index.php?threads/smoke-ash-steam-marches-road-engine-shed.3503/ Mine is nowhere that standard, but I'm happy with progress so far.
Andrew I do like the coal office and staithe, I think using the real coal dust does look better but it’s messy.
Progress on the Maron Station and Engine shed has been slow of late as a result of an operation on my back just before Christmas. Thankfully my recovery is going well and I have been able to do a few bits and pieces. The engine shed area is now finished with some weathering of the buildings and added some storage barrels. I've also created some puddles by gluing in place some clear plastic. I have also turned my attention to the station area....... Some weathering of the station building and platforms have taken place. I have also weathered the track with the general soot / brake deposits / grime that you get when trains are stationary for periods of time. I have also added fencing to the station platforms and some detailing in the form of a pillar box and traditional phone box. More work planned this week on the station area: more fencing and detailing, I'll post up the photos soon. Best regards Andrew.
Ouch Andrew ... back surgery sounds serious ... glad you are recovering nicely now, so take things easy for now mate. The station is really coming into its own character now with what I see as rural charm... looking forward to seeing developments as they happen.
