I am now committed to a house move and my 'adviser' tells me that I can have a 5m x 4.5m room for the required new layout/railway room.
The house has been designed by us and the Project is just about to go to the District Planner for approval. We anticipate that we will be 'in' in about 20 months, so I have plenty of time to get the railway right this time, rather than make do. It will be totally Analog OO scale (but built to EM standards, with One Operator.) I currently expect it to be very loosely based on 'Marthwaite'. Turnouts and Signals operated by Servos controlled by Arduino System.
In anticipation of this I have done a lot of research and have purchased a Mega 2560 Starter Kit and 25 servos to get me going. I have almost everything else that I think I will need to get at least modules built and tested as proof of concept and with the help of this Forum I am sure that within days I will have at least a turntable turning.
All track, wiring etc exist from my previous layout so I should be able to have something to keep me occupied for the next 18 months!!! I shall being taking my current layout baseboards with me, which are suitable for modification where necessary.
I shall now read all of the posts on the 'Dark Side' and hope to learn enough to ask sensible questions.
BTW - I'm just turned 81 years old, but planning to have a good few years enjoying what will probably be my last layout!!!
Hope to see you over there!

    Hi

Wow that is some room, I'm jealous.

While your in your research phase, have a look at the I2C (pronounced I squared C - so I'm told) interface, the problem with servo's is the control wire can't be too long.
Using the Arduino (and or Raspberry Pi) I2C bus you can extend the distance and by using I2C servo controllers expand the number of devices you can control.
The above link is just an example, and you will probably get better value from ebay.

    Welcome to the Dark side

    Paul

    Thanks Paul,
In my research, I have already looked at servo drivers and have added them to my new list of purchases, along with a couple of other items that have been recommended. But as time is on my side, so to speak, I hope to be properly prepared for the final installation. I will be following the Dark side postings with very careful interest...
    Regards,
    Martin

    Hi Martin.
You might find membership of MERG (Model Electronics Railway Group) worthwhile. There is a download book available from there which explains in fairly simple terms lots of information which may be useful to help in your decisions. As a member you are able to buy easy to assemble (assuming you can solder competently) kits for many model railway applications at very reasonable prices.
    Keith.
