Well, I'm having a break from Viccy Roads buildings, the new weapon arrived yesterday

    GaGa SP180K-Double-action-Trigger-Air-paint-Control-Airbrush-0-2mm-0-3mm-0-5mm-Needle

So time to test it, and guess who / what the victim is ....

Body coulour first - i'm using Revel Acrylic No. 83 - Rust. This paint is like tar, so was thinned down in the bottle first, before final thinning in the mixing cup.

My previous attempts at spraying tended to produce orange peel textures.
Probably caused by the pressure being too high, too thick paint and possibly a bent needle.

    Line pressure reduced to 15psi.
The SP180 is supplied with a 0.2, 0.3 & 0.5 mm needle and nozzel. I have used the 0.3 mm needle / nozzle combination for this part of the build.

I have thinned the paint down far more than I would normally.

Pre-spraying paint I ran a cup of acetone, then 2 cups of thinners through the brush.

    Moment of truth time

1st thin coat - tested on a tissue, and a fine brown mist appeared, now for the model.

Wow .... this looked good - well to me it looked good.

Just waiting for the paint to dry before coat no.2

    Hi paul,
looks good and no loss of detail so I'd suspect you have the mix there or there about.

Several light coats of Hubrol gloss cote applied, then the transfers.

These were then sealed in with another coat of gloss cote.

The buffers and Fish cast plates were painted black, and the slate destination board in dark grey.

Panel lines were picked out with Humbrol Black enamel wash. Any excess will be removed when dry

    Looks like this

A cotton bud dampened with enalmel thinners will remove the excess once dry

While waiting for the wash to dry, I sprayed the roof - Tamiya XF24 Dark Grey.

Then cleaned up the wash with a dampened cotton bud.

    All 4 sides

Need to add weight, just don't know how much to add. Then stick the roof on - i'll follow Steve Fay's advice and drill a hole in the floor to let the fumes escape.
Then I think a light spray with a sandy brown colour to represent road dirt, then a bit of powders and washes (brown and dust washes on the underframe). Nothing too heavy on this one.

I have been impressed with the airbrush, so much so, that the BG's I did earlier in my workbench thread my be heading for the dettol - again :headbanger:

Never even noticed the roof was done  too busy looking at some of the details. The grey looks about right though. Needs dirt though. :avatar:

A bit of trawling on the net, has offered two possible wts

GOG - suggests 1g per mm (approx 1oz/inch) with a minimum weight of 125g or 4.4oz

    Others recommend between 50 & 75 g per axel.

I'll weigh the wagon in the morning, and probably follow the GOG guide.

    Apologies Paul,

I've come downstairs for a drink of water, brought me IPad and went to log into the GOG. Left me membership no in my wallet in the bedroom. If I go back up and waken the dragon ......... I'll be on deaf and dumb dinners for the next month.

I'll check out their forum tomorrow night at the hotel ( with WIFI ) and come back to you. Geeeeesh ...... More forums. :avatar:

    Toto

Just had a thought to reduce the need for loco power. Fill said wagon with dog biscuits, put wagon on track, when dog gets scent of biscuits, he'll chase wagon round track with nose. ........ Sorted.

And on that cheery note .......... Goodnight........ Or is it good morning ....... I'm up at five.

    Thanks guys

Yup Chris very happy with the new airbrush, and I haven't tried the 0.2 needle / nozzle yet.

Chalk marks - damn that Lefty, he cleaned it off just before the photo shoot :avatar:

The van looks really good Paul,
I really struggled at one time when spraying and when my old compressor made a bid for freedom and smashed itself to bits I took a bit of advice when buying a new compressor/airbrush. The main bit of advice was to buy an airbrush with 0.5mm nozzle if I was mainly spraying acrylics (I use mostly Vallejo Acrylics for my painting) because the acrylic pigments are much dense and flow better through the larger nozzle.

Since taking this advice I haven't looked back.

    Thanks Rob

I'll give the 0.5 nozzle a try. At the price of the airbrush, if its a goer then I think it would be sensible to have one at 0.5 and another for 0.2 or 0.3 nozzle.
On my Slater s Rectangular tank builds, I had success using Humbrol Enamel washes loaded neat into the airbrush.
