I have had an idea on how to make good use of a piece of 9mm MDF board that came with our new fire surround, its 48", 1200mm x 15", 380mm.

My question is this, do y,all think I should shorten it? maybe 3ft, or leave it as it is, I want to power it as I would also like to use it as a test track for my loco kit building, also I am not a fan of the flat earth society so I would like to raise the track bed around 19mm, any suggestions?

    Cheers, Pete.

Look in Wilkinson's, they did have some brick sized blocks of Florists Foam. There are two types, dry and wet. If not you could uses foam board and laminate it up to the height you want. I would leave it at the 4ft length so that a small train could be photographed, and bear in mind something like a bogie bolster or syphon are big in O gauge.

    Hi Pete

If you mount the block (say approx 2" thick) a couple of inches back from the front edge you could have a small harbour.

Hmm, food for thought, I will check out the florists foam, thing is if I remember right it is quite crumbly, I will also look at the foam board option, I would like to keep the weight down as much as I can for handling.

    Cheers, Pete.

    Hi Pete

    How about these

    http://www.diy.com/departments/celotex-insulation-board-l1200mm-w450mm-t-50mm/307375_BQ.prd

    http://www.diy.com/departments/jablite-insulation-board-l1200mm-w450mm-t-50mm/26816_BQ.prd

Cover the track bed area with grey board and you will have a flat surface to work on.

Why not cut a slot in the baseboard and turn it into an inspection pit ?? :scratchchin:

You could have a low relief corrugated iron wall as a backscene, maybe a coaling platform, oil drums, stand pipe/water column....

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks Gary, an excellent idea, to be honest I was thinking along the lines (excuse the pun) of a country goods/coal yard with a rural background, I have been out this morning walking Jake and I,ve taken some photos of the farm down the road, I am going to print them off, join them together and see how I get on from there, nothing is set in stone yet so any ideas are still welcome.

    Cheers, Pete.

Coal yard, good idea. If I'm right, you are building the coal office for the Scalescenes Competition and no doubt it will possibly need a new home in the future.

    Cheers, Gary.

Next I have glued some 6mm ply on top of the poly, weighted down, next job is to lay some track, that is for tomorrow.

Looks like the ground under your 7mm feet is starting to take shape and will need some judicious carving. I like to use a wire brush for carving land formations. It is very messy but you can file away what you don't need with ease. Make sure you have a vacuum handy or do this outdoors ! :D

    Cheers, Gary.

Its been a while since posting anything on this topic and truth be told not a great deal has been done, however whilst at Derby model rail show I picked up a couple of resin cast steel bridge sides cheaply, they were seconds, any way I straightened them out and I have made a shallow river cutting under the railway,

    these are the sides,

I made these stone topped brick piers to sit the sides on,but until the landform is finished I won,t fit them.

Hopefully when finished my photos will look better than this :giggle:.

    Cheers for now Pete.

Its intended to be a photo board only, however in my mind its a goods yard for a small off scene country station so potentially if I were to build a small, two or three wagon and small loco fiddle yard, all of a sudden its a small layout..........

    Cheers, Pete.

I have glued down some card to level the ground and I,ve plastered the river bank,

I put the left hand pier in place before plastering but I wrapped it in clingfilm first so it wouldn,t get clarted up in plaster, I will remove it once the plaster is set.

    Cheers, Pete.
