G`day Folks, As some of you know, I have kit bashed and scratch built a few buildings. I enjoy enhancing the buildings with interiors, not that the interiors can be easily seen from the standard viewing distance, but I know they are there and it just adds something extra to the look of the models. Let`s call it the standard method.......was to print a room interior scaled to the correct size to fit across the back wall of a room in a building. The print was then applied to card and fitted into the building. This method works very well and can be further enhanced with LED lighting. When the back wall is viewed though the windows for that room, it looks very convincing. Taking it one step further, instead of having the image applied to a flat back wall, I decided to try it using a curved wall that could be used either to span one or two windows across a room. The effect is almost three dimensional and gives a certain depth when viewed through the windows. LED lighting is also most effective when bounced off the back of the front wall and the LEDs can`t be seen. The room on the left has a two window background, whereas the room on the right has a one room background with the window on the left blanked out with card. This method also allows all the necessary wiring to be enclosed within the building, rather than trying to run it down the original back walls. The LEDs on the floor are lighting the rooms below So I just thought I would pass this on ,for those who may not have seen it in my layout thread ,because it is very simple and easy to achieve and saves fitting miniature furniture. Adding a figure to a room near the window is also very effective. Gormo
Super idea there Gormo and adding figures certainly give that additional attention to detail... have you been adding night time bedroom scenes as well or is that a case of LED lights off?
Well you see Paul..... Bamford.....where these buildings are located, is a very conservative and particularly religious community. I am sure plenty of hanky panky goes on when the lights are off, but to have it on full display with the lights on would be a big no no for this lot. I am sure that if a modeller had an inclination to produce a naughty scene, it could be done quite effectively utilizing mechanical aids to have the figures constantly gyrating, caught in the act so to speak, and sound chips could be employed for all the appropriate moaning and groaning that normally would accompany such a scene. One can only wonder in amazement about the marvels of technology that are available to create such a scene and make it the focal point of any layout. Gormo
Very wise words indeed Gormo... I am pleased to hear that the lovely village of Bamford has moral standards which one can only give full respect to... seriously the curved internal view concept is genious.
Well thanks Paul, I guess because the image comes right around to the sides of the windows, it looks like all the walls in the room are decorated. The effect in miniature is like those huge cinema screens where you have to turn your head to see the edges, it`s more immersive. That`s probably not a good explanation........but let`s just say it looks better than the flat back wall method. Gormo
In my opinion Gormo the curved backdrop works best because it is not 2D and flat as per stage scenery, so the viewer gets a perception of real depth.
