I would suggest sticking one solebar on and then adding the wheels and the other solebar at the same time so that you can ensure that the wheels sit flat on a sheet of glass or a tile (what ever you have with a flat surface). This will ensure smoother running and less chance of derailment when you run it.

Then add the brakes after you have it sat squarely.

You will probably get the wheels from Wizard too. Andrew (Hartshorne the proprietor) seems to stock most things.

You just need to ensure that for your wagon that you get 12mm 8 spoke rather than 14mm 8 spoke (the latter are the bigger coach wheels).

There you go Mark, I have learned something from your build too. Although I use Eileens regularly, I had no idea that they did 4mm scale wheels etc. I don't do many 4mm builds these days and I doubt if I will but it's good to know which suppliers stock things.

    Hi Mark

Nice build, you will find the wheel sets are normally supplied with bearings - or at least they were when I last bought 4mm wheel sets :whatever:.

and now you see what happens when don't read all the posts before posting

I've used Gibson wheels, and are nice looking whhels, check the tyres are securely on, if not a spot of Cyano (super glue) will keep them inplace for years.

Maybe worth investing in a back to back gauge to ensure all your wheels are set the same.

Hi Keith I’m heading in that direction slowly as I need to get enough practice in.

White metal wagons give the opposite problem, they are far heavier, and not easily lightened, if you must use them keep them towards the front of the train. Heavy wagons at the rear and tight curves (set track) don't always play well together.

Hi Mark, a great start with kit building mate.
When you get to build the underframe and wheels axles etc, before fitting the bearings make a small nick in the hole in the axle box where the bearing fits to let air out when you install them. A small dab of super glue on the tip of a tooth pick or similar will hold them firmly. I can't remember if I had to drill the axle boxes on my 4mm Slaters wagons or not, so try a dry run first. Once the glue has set after 24 hours preferably, the wheel sets can be removed without a problem for painting/weathering etc.

    Cheers, Pete.

Just a little update, I can’t progress with my build until the wheels, axles and bearings arrive. Hopefully later today or tomorrow.;)

Hi I had word today about the wheels and bearings I ordered over a week ago now. Eileens Emporium is waiting for an overdue shipment from Alan Gibson:facepalm: . I have a set in my tool box with 3 holes in each wheel but don’t know if they can be used.

I very much doubt that this type of wagon would ever have had 3 hole disks fitted. But you could fit them temporary to get it further towards being finished until your order arrives.

Sorry I'm not commenting up on this thread Mark but 4mm is a distant memory to me now so I wouldn'twant to offer inaccurate advicebut Rob will put you right if needed. Personally these old pre group wagons generally had the split spoke wheels.

No problem at all Yorkie. You have done that and worn the T-shirt:avatar:I will have to be patient and wait till the correct wheels arrive. I can add the bearings as they are the same while I wait.

Yes put the bearings in and probably resist adding the disc wheels because you may have difficulty springing the plastic to get them out once the right wheels are on hand to swap over.

Hi this afternoon I have fitted the bearing with a tiny bit superglue, just waiting now for the wheel sets to arrive.
