Early days yet with no definitive trackplan but the intention is to have 2 levels on a plank 130cm x 25cm ... the other intention is to have a 2 self contained playi ... running layouts on the same board. The first part will be a raised single passenger line (including catenary) with a small hidden fiddle yard at one end and a station at the other. This will permit me to run the railbus, autocoach and E2 or steeple cab or any of my Triang locos.
The lower main part will be a goods shunting layout (no trackplan for that bit yet) with minimal ballasting but maximum fu ... running time. The board is built so all I need now is the tinto ... what have I done ...

Not sure what you are going to shunt on the lower level Ian, but at present you can only run around whatever will fit on one of the slips and still allow enough clearance to get past.

Also if your going to use some sort of 'hands free' uncoupling system, you also need to figure out where any magnets or uncoupling ramps need to be.

    Just my thoughts.

The track going under is very short Ian. Will you be able to achieve the gradient in such a short distance :scratchchin: otherwise ..... Exciting stuff.

Strike that last post, I can see what's happening with the upper and lower track levels.

That's what I get for posting 1 st thing in the morning before I waken up. :avatar:

Looks good, what kind of loco's are you taking through these points though ?

Hi Toto on the lower level I'll be using my Mailine J72's and Prairie or 0 6 0 diesel shunter. On the upper level it'll be the railbus and Airfix auto coach also a Triang steeple cab or E2 once I've adjusted the wheels. The lower plan excludes the engine shed to give more shunting options ... and the signal box is sized as a Scalescenes build ... wadaya think?

I had a problem in that I wanted to fit auto uncoupling to one of the lower fiddle yard branch lines. But as this would be out of sight I would need some sort of indicator but didnt want to go down the electrickery route. Below is what I've come up with using repeling neodym magnets and a cheap biro pen. It will entail fitting a magnet in roughly the same position in every wagon (this I can do when I build them) and then fine tune the position of the moving magnet so it doesnt throw the wagon sideways of the track. Not only will it tell me where the uncoupler is but will also show if the wagon is coupled... if this works it'll be worthy of the 'Wizard of Oz' otherwise known as 'Goatee gormo'.

Excuse my floundering thickness but what are the side mounted repeling magnets for. ? it takes a bit of time for me old head to get round the principle but it sure sounds good.

Hi Toto you need to be able to read tintoease ... the siding in question is on the left behind tbe arches and under the upper fiddle yard so I wont be able to see when the magnetic uncoupler has lifted the coupling hook. This gizmo thingymajig will tell me when the wagon is above the track magnets as the barrel etc will move ... either that or the ground will come rushing up to meet me ...

Another option to make uncoupling easier is to have only one hook on each wagon and the locos have both hooks. This way you don't have to have double the magnets and staples soldered to every coupler...
    Just a thought...:scratchchin:

    Cheers, Gary.
