one of my favourite shots from the recent Hornby Magazine article
Double headed kings on the south Devon banks. A regular occurrence in the summer months in the mid 50’s on a summer Saturday when the Cornish Riviera was booked non stop to Truro the train changed engines at Newton Abbot exchanging the king for a pair of smaller locos, the train engine was then booked as pilot to train 131 the relief that ran 10 mins behind the main train.
The relief was booked to stop at Plymouth where it would also exchange the kings for a smaller engine for the journey into Cornwall.
a full set of chocolate and cream stock was also rostered to the relief showing its importance in the timetable and as it was a tight turn around the headboard would often be left in place.
