Cheers Paul, yes never modelled a TMD or diesel only layout, so nice to broaden the horizon.
This is a team effort again. More to come next week

Well this weeks report sees the layout moving along nicely. Paul managed to mould all the working platform supports and the final set of steps into the pit lane. He’s cut all the packing blocks and shaped all the in fill pieces to go between the running lines and tracks to form a representation of the concrete walk ways front and rear of the shed. This is a long fiddly process which will take him a few days to finish as each line will need testing to make sure the wheel flanges don’t fowl.
So today we concentrated on fitting the supports (drilled into a 4mm holes) and making the platform tops. Lots of measuring, sanding and a bit of glue to temporarily install them and then check all was good with some running in and out with some of Pauls loco’s.

And with the shed in place .

Platform steps ?? :scratchchin: 10 sets of 7 steps to try and make, or buy. Searching the web found nothing exactly the same as the prototype so I suggested to Paul that we had a go at making a mock up one using what ever we had to hand and see if we could take cast a mould and make a resin set up.

so using a lollipop stick, cut and filed to shape to make the side sections of the stairway....

next using some ‘Blue Stuff” from Green Stuff World, that I’ve had for ages and not found a project to try it out on, make a mould.
First soften the material in hot water for 3-5 mins, then mould it into a lump. I put the 2 side pieces on a plastic sheet and then pressed the mould material over it.

Using a 2 pack resin, fill the mould and leave for 15 mins to set then turn out the mould.

A little bit of filing required to clean up the edges and then a quickly hashed together jig to make up the stairs unit. We cut some 2mm plastic to form the steps, super glued them into place and the result was not to bad.

The beauty of the Blue stuff mould is that it can be re softened with hot water and used for other projects. So in principle it looks like we have a plan now to cast all 20 sides and then assemble in a jig.
I need to make a better more accurate side section, probably out of plasticard , not lollipop sticks, as they are difficult to file to shape. The step thickness will need to be reduced slightly as well.

so a good 3 hours work to test out this “new” to me product and what looks like a working plan to sort out this part of Pauls project.

Never seen 'Blue Stuff' before, very interesting... Making a mould definitely saves all that measuring, cutting, filing repeatedly ! Nice work.:thumbs::thumbs:

    Cheers, Gary.

Cheers Gary, yes and a lot cheaper than using my normal mould material. I think it is limited to more basic shapes but so far I’m impressed and will certainly give it a go with other items.

cheap enough at the moment but obviously try your local suppliers first. I think I/we paid 12 euros a couple of years back, I sent for three packs for me, Ralph and Steve Power.

    Cheers Toto.

Something different to model for a change. Pauls master plan is for this TMD to be in the centre of a 2 mainline running layout incorporating a through the station and a large (in length not numbers) storage area. The thing that’s amazed me helping him design this layout is just how long modern freight stock and loco’s such as the class 60’s are.

now had you 3D printed them... you’d probably be waiting a fortnight for them to arrive! :giggle:

Cheers Andy, I did think about 3D printing, but didn’t know who to ask locally. I did try a guy north of Perth with a 1:50 scale job for a truck a few months back and it turned out terrible, thankfully he agreed and didn’t charge me
Pauls not in a rush to get them done so I’ll spend some time getting a master made up in plasticard and then re cast.
Still got to sort out how / what we are going to use for hand rails. I used some from a boat builder last time but as they are brass I think the cost is going to be far to much.

No, I think you have done a great job.!
Trouble with the 3D is sometimes it’s too clinical, where as you get the odd defect etc when hand built. That gives it character..

Paper clips straightened out sometimes make good handrails?

    Round 2.

This time I’ve used some 1.6mm plasticard to make the side runners. Drawn as accurately as I could, then cut out with a sharp craft knife

Again using the “Blue Stuff” I made a mould and cast a copy in resin, then made a second mould of the 2 pieces to cast them in pairs to increase productivity.

‘Happy with the new jig to form the step assembly, I’m using 1mm for the treads now which looks a lot better to my eye.
Hand rails next. I’ve had a quick trial with 1mm plastic rod and a cobbled together jig, but it’s a fiddly job and I think brass wire soldered will give a better end result.
So a result with the steps, Paul has just 9 more to assemble while I have a second go at the hand rails.

Hand rails, attempt number 2 using brass rod, a jig to hold the 4 pieces and a blob of solder on the joints.

    posed with a MODELU3D figure.

I think this looks a lot better. So jig will be handed over to Paul and he can have a crack at the next 19 !!
