Spent the afternoon in the shed ripping out the current set up ( layouts no more ) and making ready for the Highlander Models workshop.

    started with this .......

    and this .......

and needed to take the high level shelving out and move the flourescent lighting away from what will be the hot works area.

    So .........

lighting moved into the centre of the shed ceiling .......

out with the shelving ( and the beginning of a wasps nest  )

and then the removal of part of the existing work top, reducing the level of where the spincaster and furnace will fit

Now ..... a trip to B & Q to see if I can find a battered / damaged length of worktop to barter a discount on. It does not have to be pretty, just thick and strong to take the weight of the spincaster and furnace.

    I'll report back later

    cheers for now

Back from B and Q with a bit of the cheapest worktop they had. Unfortunately white but hey ho ...... it'll do

and here it is cut ( in B and Q ) and now fitted.

and the spin caster in place along side the furnace ...... just at the right working height for me and with plenty space round about to lay down the moulds and turn out the casts once cooled off.

I'm on a roll now so maybe more later. The new worktop will need strengthened underneath but that is in hand as there will be a re-organisation of the under neath area for keeping moulds and white metal ingots etc.

    cheers for now.

    cheers

Looks like its going to be next weekend now before any other significant progress. I have a case to pack, shave, dog to walk, car to empty from my weekends adventure ..... :avatar: So ..... next on the cards ...... The area under the Hot Zone to be reinforced and the shelving / storage area beneath to be altered to provide a more useful space layout in terms of storage shelves etc.

The area nearest the door ( currently not highlighted in the photos very well ) shall also be adjusted for storage of etches etc.

once this side of the shed is complete, the other side ( the clean side ) will be re-organised to suit packaging etc including storage dockets for finished white metal castings etc ready to be packed into " kit packs ". My own private collection of kits may have to go ( into storage :avatar: ) to make better use of the available space. I'll make the best of the space I have at the moment but if things do take off, a new purpose built workshop will be the order of the day. Depending on how the white metal casting takes off, if I find enough accesory products ( in addition to the kit items ) then a vulcaniser may be a future investment as well.

however, for now, one step at a time. I'm hoping to have my first " home produced " white metal parts made from my current practice mould within the next couple of weeks. I dont want playing to get in the way of getting the shed ship shape.

    stay tuned.

Its looking all rather good Toto, the factory is coming together quickly now and I foresee the first of the new Highlander Models locos making a debut in the not to distant future.:tophat:

    Sure is Ian

It all about trying to get all the mini projects moving at the same time. The Loco kits are moving nicely with the 26 and 27 progressing beyond initial design now. I am at the stage of securing the moulds for the new castings and setting myself up to deal with all the white metal myself as each loco becomes available.

The 24 and 25 are now going through the same paces as the 26 and 27 did and taking shape. An all new 37 is currently on the drawing board and shall be next to follow the others towards a prototype version.

As each of the above nears fruition, automatically a range of accessories also becomes available ( generated from the kit design etches )

I am also currently looking at introducing say 4 initial wagon designs as well based on 10 foot wheel base versions. More on that later as the exact wagon types won't be decided until nearer the end of this week.

Then there is designing and sourcing packaging and various miscellaneous items. ..... drafting instructions ...... it goes on and on. However, as you say, it is exciting and I am delighted with the way things are going. ........ A bit like your book ....... it all takes time. Oh ..... and money.

    Cheers for now

    Hi Yorkie,

I'm still thinking about the various processes that need to be met by the available space and working out how best to use the space. Now that I have started in earnest, things will fly in as the shed renovations are nothing new to me and I find this type of stuff easy enough. I'll be back into it next weekend when further leaps shall be made. I'm fired up for it and looking forward to getting this part of things over the line.

I need to get that spin caster earning it's keep. :avatar:

    Cheers

Good progress grasshopper - looks like the mojo has found its way out of the cupboard.

Sounds all good and as you said the Class 27 build has taken a massive leap forward over the last couple of days, so much so that I'm not far off waiting for those reworked body etches.

These should be on there way as Steve was sorting these out with the etchers. I'll get the body sent down as soon as it lands.

Good luck with your business venture Toto, I imagine it'll not be long before we'll be seeing your presence at some of the shows with boxes of models for sale instead of walking round looking at and buying other traders goods.

More than likely into next year Keith. I should have a range up on my website for sale in the last quarter of this year but it will be next year for attending any exhibitions.

    Thanks chaps,

Looking forward to getting home tomorrow. I'll crack on with the shed on Saturday. Another length of worktop may be the order of the day for the other ( clean / packaging ) side, to be decided. I'll need another couple of trips to the tip as well. Power tools at the ready.

    Cheers

For a packing table all you need is 2"x 1" framework supporting 8mm ply sheeting... probably a much cheaper option than using heavy high density worktop.

This is a fascinating thread - love seeing the 'behind the scenes' photos of the shed coming together!
