this year marks the 200th anniversary of the Mansfield and Pinxton Railway, what I believe is one of the oldest in the country, being horse drawn originally. This week there is an exhibition on at the Mansfield Museum. It’s a small display, but features some original and replica track and a smashing model which lives in my uncles back yard! The original line didn’t use sleepers just stone blocks as the horses would have tripped on the sleepers. This photo was on display at the library and shows the bridge as was, and the old Kings Mill, along side Kings Mill Reservoir in Mansfield. The mill burnt down in about 1963 and replaced by houses now known as Randol Close. Here is my drone video I filmed late last summer. You should be able to compare the two.. I was filming from the bridge.
This will help anyone locate it. https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16.99628070121895&lat=53.1328&lon=-1.2244&layers=1&b=1
Great video Andy, I love drone footage (like looking down on a model ), what a great spot and hidden treasure, I can just imagine myself as a kid playing in the water under those arches.
Thanks... But the water under there is fast from the overflow from the res. And that suffers from green algae, so even the boating has to stop some weeks!
Walked around the reservoir area a few times Andy, but never realised this tramway had existed. One of my fellow Walk Leaders is an Ex-Mansfield chap, so I'll have to ask him about this. Keith.
