Well hear we go hopefully there will be a picture of what started this journey off. I bought this train set (R4D) when I Was 16, I am now 62. As you can see from the photo I have bought some wood. This is to make a plank layout to get me started, as suggested by Paul. Thanks. Hopefully this will be incorporated into the final layout. I have already spent a year thinking and planning the final layout. The plan is to model my local branch line, which will run off a double track main line. Because I am at the very low end budget wise, the locos will be whatever I can Buy with the money I have, so although the layout will be based on an Australian railway most of the locos and rolling stock will be British. So the journey begins. Attached files
The old girl looks in tip top condition. I have a B Class also in my historic collection. Best wishes for a successful journey Cheers and happy modelling Richard
That set does look in great condition. If you are planning a new layout, consider your plank as a drop in piece for the larger layout. Take a look at what our members have been up to in the Model Railway Layouts section under Planks : http://p1mrc.com/p1mrc/view_forum.php?id=7 Some excellent ideas there. Cheers, Gary.
Off to a great start and a nice looking set. You 've bought the wood ....... That's you committed now there is no escape. Looking forward to seeing how your plank works out. Keep us all updated and scream out if we can be of assistance. Do you have a name for the layout yet or is that still simmering away in the back of your mind. Cheers Toto
I know some of you won't find this exciting, but to me, it's a wonderful gift. A friend of mine kindly donated these locos and rolling stock to me. The Hornby train set was won by him in a colouring competition, when he was young. On the Marty the monster show, for all those that live in Australia might remember. Attached files
What a great gift and a great train set. One of my friends had Hornby train sets and the catalogues back in the very early 80's. I used to dream about that particular set, thinking "one day, one day..." That day never came... Ah yes, Marty The Sea Monster...! This will make you laugh... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_NqulhmZWc Cheers, Gary.
You are certainly off to a flying start. Can't quite make out the track but is the new lot Super 4 and compatible with your original set? Cheers and happy modelling Richard
Thanks Gary, I remember that clip very funny🤓 Richard the track and points in that set are cactus. Very old, it's not super 4 but if it was any good I could have used it. I have some new and some really good secondhand points and track.
Please be aware that the wheel sets on the streamlined B Class and Trans Australia coaches will not roll through Code 100 points. You should be ok with the freight set (S Class streamliner and wagons). Cheers, Gary.

The Blue set that is pictured at the start of the post is one of the original Triang Trans Continental/Trans Australia sets, made for the Australian market from 1958 onward. The locomotive was based on a Victorian Railways B Class. Other coaches were available for this set, including Dinning Car (R325 & R420), Observation Car (R133 & R445A - 1969), Vista Dome Car (R27B), Baggage Car (R134) and Baggage/Kitchen Car (R446). A pic of a pair of B Class locomotives double heading the 'Spirit Of Progress'... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Railways_B_class_(diesel)#/media/File:Spirit-of-progress-70th-anniversary-2007.jpg Cheers, Gary.
Hi Scottystitch, this was an Australian release, with Transcontinental Railways on the side. However they used the same mould for a variety of coaches. Silver , red etc. There is a great source of info on you tube. Check out John's Amazing Trains. Mainly Triang . Phil
I always use this as a source of information : http://www.hornbyguide.com/default.asp You will find every model released by Triang Railways, Triang/Hornby, Triang/Wrenn, Hornby Railways and Hornby, right up to 2011. Cheers, Gary.
This 03 shunter was purchased from eBay with 3 other locos, at a very cheap price. When the parcel arrived, there was an extra Bachmann rolling chassis for the 03 shunter, with a note from the buyer explaining that is was not happy with the running condition of the replica railway 03 shunter. As many of you know these shunters are notoriously problematic. So after about six months of fiddling about, I have finally got it running again. It's not perfect, but good enough for me. It was a long and difficult learning curve, but I gained a lot of satisfaction out of it. I recommend to anyone who has got a broken down loco, pull it to bits and have a go at repairing it. And yes I'm 63 and still play with trains on the floor. Wish I would hurry up and build that shed
