The December 1958 issue of The Railway Magazine featured three photographs of Beyer Garrett locomotives at work in East Africa. These were giants of the metre-gauge that grappled with long loads on steep inclines and at times sharply curved track radii. ....... http://rogerfarnworth.com/2025/07/08/three-beyer-garratts-in-east-africa-in-the-1950s/
They are beasts arnt they! I'd love to have seen one of those in the UK - but next best is the ones that were acquired for the Welsh Highland line in Wales.
There were a few working coal trains in the UK. ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LMS_Garratt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LNER_Class_U1
My friend has just bought a second O gauge Garratt , LMS version+ non-sound fitted . His other is a LNER sound fitted version , I believe the sound fitted is a Merchant Navy and has several station announcements' . Both bought from EC recently . Tony.
Do the needs two decoders like a diesel top and tail? Just thinking two lots of cylinders and exchausts?
I bought a few Hornby HM7000 decoders from Rails. The Next18 version is only £34.50, got some Next18 female to solder tags adapter boards (and some 21 pin to Next18 femail adapter boards as well). Hornby do have the 4F as a downloadable sound profile. I've downloaded the 2MT sound profile and I've heard worse costing a lot more. Paul
I believe the LNER BG has two speakers and one chip . The sound to me is ridiculous and those station announcements are too modern. My mate who is in his late seventies likes the sounds. He would be happier if the BG smoked, the loco`s he has that smoke look like a smouldering cigarette. He seems happy with them. Tony
