Sometimes the most difficult part of attempting something new is plucking up the courage to actually have a go at it Toto, getting 'good at it' only comes with time and experience, so we all have to go through the learning curve, and it can be steep on occasion! Thinking it through before diving in is the best way, and I like your idea of soldering a bit of brass rod to awkward small parts, threading the rod through the chassis and soldering from the rear, that's definitely 'Thinking it through'. All part of the path from 'Novice' to 'Expert'!:giggle:

It's all the little things that you pick up from others, usually on here funnily enough.

Things are getting better but I dont like holding myself up ...... to be shot down ..... by myself.:avatar:

Well tonight found me back in the shed with some predetermined tasks to undertake.

first saw the installation of the second set of plunger pick ups which were needed in order to try and provide a more reliable power supply to the motor. then came the installation of the white metal hoses ..... fair enough and also the couplings.

I managed to lose one of the springs for one end. I wont tell the story as I am sure you can visualise what happened ....... ping !!!!! never to be seen again so I will need to " procure " a replacement.

I do have some photos which I shall post up later ......... nothing out of the ordinary i fear.

I put the chassis on the rolling road and there is power to tham thar wheels. I still have the rods to do and tweak the whole thing a bit as the running needs to be improved ....... a tweak here and a hammer there.

I intend doing the rods and running gear adjustments tomorrow night as well as any messing around with the electrics if required.

After that ...... its a bit of filling to tidy up the bodywork a bit and hopefully ready for a primer coat once everything is deemed as running well.

I'll try and get tonights photos up later.

    cheers for now

I have the OO version which I built years ago. It’s not the best runner as uses the copper wiper pickup idea which I think you have avoided. What also didn’t help was the gearbox and motor that were included had the tendency to stop meshing despite everything being tight. I overcame that issue after a few months (I forget how now?) and it does run quite smooth when it wants to. It’s now DCC fitted.

OK ...... thenstart of a paint job for the body and footplate today. i had Dundee down assisting to get my air brush set up on the correct settings for spraying as to date, its either been to blustery or to weak. So .... apparently 20 psi and you are good to go.

So, i had to clear the bike out of the shed which is a task in itself as its a bit neat ..... however,

out it came for a sit in the rain as it started to rain later in the afternoon.

spray booth and turntable set up to house the victim.

and there we go ..... the footplate section first. and a coat of grey primer ....

Me sweating behind a hot airbrush ..... giving it a coat of black after several thin coats of grey had been applied.

then the black goes on ......

and a bit of filler to the cab and bonnet ....

ten its on with the grey primer .... again ..... several light coats .....

then in with the black after giving the grey time to dry out which does not take long ......

and the final image for today .....

next up ..... later, I have white metal brake shoes to fit to the chassis frames, strip out the electrics and prime the chassis ready for the re-fitting of the electrics, the tie rods and the fonal setting up and running in of the motor and gears which are not the best at this moment. More work needed there.

Anyway ..... a god day had with Dundee and another big thanks for sharing his wisdom on the setting up of the airbrush

    cheers

The chassis to deconstruct, add brake shoes, paint and tweak the running performance.... getting there slowly.

Looking good sir  you did well, and the only  moment was by yours truly was demonstrating why you don't put too much paint into cup and move the brush too quickly - and Murphy strikes and allows a slug of paint to fly towards the roof .

Primer used Vallejo Grey Surface Primer used neat from the bottle. Paint pressure 20psi.
Paint Tamiya XF1 Black diluted 50:50 with Tamiya X20 thinner again pressure at 20psi.

The rear travel adjuster was screwed in to restrict the amount of paint Toto could deliver in the fully open position until he develops the feel for each paint brush.
As mentioned earlier he got used to keep checking the spray pattern on a piece of card, as soon as the pattern narrowed, he cleaned the tip.

Comparing the Higher Quality Paache Talon against the cheaper brush I usually use, finish was similar, where I did notice a big difference was on cleaning, the Paache has a lot more seals along the needle length, keeping the paint in the front of the brush. Whereas on my cheepo there are minimal seals, which can give major cleaning headaches if you need to spray in an upwards direction. Control is smoother on the Paache along the full length of travel - not something Toto is finding out just yet as I cut his range down.

We may see more paint jobs soon as he is threatening to paint a batch of Hopper wagons he has.

    Paul

As with most things the only way you get to be any good is by doing it repeatedly.
