I am in the process of fitting a DCC decoder to one of these locos and whilst working out how to dismantle this little beast, which was quite tricky, I have one part that was released made of a folded piece of thin rigid plastic sheet, possibly for insulation somewhere that I cannot find where it was fitted, it almost appeared out of thin air. Marks on the underside side suggest it has expired adhesive on that face, that almost tallies with the rear of the X.500 motor on the face shown vertical facing left. Too wide to fit inside the body without bending, it does not appear to have been bent, apart from the mid section folded at a right angle for the last 50+ years, that long, oh dear I'm old! Circled below. It's size precludes it from many places and it is not shown on the service sheets I have found on line. Makes me wonder if it fell off of something else So, any thoughts from the community? Jim
Thanks for looking, but I have already seen this and the mystery part is not shown on this sheet or the one for the X.500 motor. Removing the body was so difficult, it seems 'normal' that some (R.651) Rocket bodies are very tight fitting, it almost exploded as I finally released it, and there was this piece! Oh well, if it all works regardless I'll leave it off, may be it was a piece of insulation at the front end for the mess of wiring to the resistor in the funnel, which I've removed anyway. It's such a large piece for such a small loco Jim
Hi Gary, I considered that, the centre flap would fit the old R.651 Rocket in the place you arrowed on the recent version of Rocket, but there is nowhere for the rest of it to fit. I'm really beginning to think this part really came from somewhere else, perhaps stuck to one of my hand tools and detached itself onto my workbench when I used the tool to remove original wiring. Generally I have found the old Tri-ang service sheets reliable, but designs do evolve and the sheets would be updated at intervals. Not aware anything was missing from other recent conversions either, oh well, Rocket is back together and working fine on DCC, a few adjustments to the decoder settings and she's sorted. I'll keep the mystery piece with the removed parts in case I find out where it's from Jim
