    Except that Pete's photo is of one of the far more numerous EM1 (later class 76) Bo+Bo type (sorry Pete). These remained in service after the passenger services ended, whereas the seven EM2s (later class 77) were sold on to the Dutch railways (Nederland Spoorwegen). that is what saved a couple long enough for preservation.

    Note the plus sign for these: the bogies were linked together and also had the buffers and drawgear, meaning there were no forces transmitted through the body structures, unlike the EM2s which were more conventional Co-Co arrangement with buffer beams and drawgear mounted on the bodies.

    Going back to the Triang model, it really was quite a good model. I had one back when I was a teenager, including some Triang single wire catenary (a contradiction in terms, I know!), wired so I could run from the overhead with a common return allowing independent control of a loco or unit on the tracks too. I painted that one BR blue with full yellow ends (sacrilege!). For nostalgic reasons, I now own a good condition green one, but I am tempted to detail it up a bit.

    I like Ian's layout design and will follow this with interest.

    Thanks SRman some interesting info there ... I've got both types of Triang catenary and also some modern Hornby international masts that I might convert to single wire type as aesthetically they will look better. Bit of a glitch at the moment as domestic goddess has decided (decreed?) that a door on my 2 trestles would be a better option than the table ... however there is no diy shop here ... so skip raiding is on the cards ... ?? :facepalm:

    She's obviously decided that you're not going to be allowed to stick the tablecloth to the table again Ian!:avatar:

    The old steeple cab reminds me of the train set that started me off properly. I had the cheaper 'Primary' series version with plastic pantograph and maroon body, plus three wagons and Series 3 track. There is nothing left of that original set now, of course, but it has all been a continuous development from then.

    progress … that's what we call change isn't it … anyway after digressing with the idea of reversible scenic cassettes I've decided to place the boiler house chimney near the centre where it will hide the joint thus;

    scenic cassette.jpg

    I 've decided to make the rear half of the scenic section into a Dairy .. thus

    everything's coming together nicely I can start the cassette scenic build now .. got card/backscenes/board etc (unbelievable that I can't get thick grey card here but the price is offset by the cheap hardboard I suppose)

    Things are coming together nicely now … a friend of ours used to be a carpenter and found an old flat door in his lock-up so Train roof/workbench almost ready for start on new plonk. It is intended to have plastic/linoleum cover over it for rainy days and where its positioned will be mostly in the shade during the hottest part of summer (cant have mi vino getting too hot)

    It will be Ed we don't get too many scratchy bitey nippy things here, just the odd friendly gecko and occasional preying mantis … funny though they only appear when the wine's flowing :scratchchin:

    Now that the goodies are gathered I can set out my sequence of build;

    • construct and populate the scenic cassettes
    • Position/wire and secure the trackwork
    • construct and populate the main scenic board
    • line up and wire the traverser
    • Line up and wire the fiddle yard/sector plate
    get more wine

    Made a start on the first of the reversible scenic cassettes ... ID backscenes in place (I used the more expensive self adhesive version due to the amount of handling it will get) the right angle brackets will be hidden by low relief buildings ... just got a layer of cork to lay... the dimensions are 57cm long (label said 60 but that's what the board turned out to be x 6cm depth each side of the back board x 20cm height ... er if you look closely you can just see the hole in the cloth as a result of supergluing it to the table last year... I dare say the other 5/8ths will know the exact day & time to the second)

    More house fronts on the way.. I'm altering the backscene and layering it plus with accessories (phone box, goat walker etc) the first half of my reversible scenic cassettes will be done ... the reverse side will have the Dairy on it (so also got to make up some milk tank wagons from my Airfix kits and styrene thingy stuff ... oh the gap/ginnel is intentional ... its a northern thing
