I'm presently involved in attempting to assemble this valve gear on two loco's currently on my kitbuilding bench, and if, like me, you haven't a clue what all the various bits and bobs comprising this valve gear are called (and many kits seem to assume that you DO know the terminology!) then this diagram with accompanying text may be of some help, taken from a book given to me this week.

    Hi Keith,

Note that the diagram is of the LNER Gresley derivative of Walschaerts valve gear for a 3 cylinder loco with conjugated motion for the middle cylinder. The LMS variety is subtly different with no parts 8/9/10.

If your locos are Southern Railway I am not sure that Bullied continued with Gresley's conjugated motion but he may well have stuck with the outer motion since that's what he knew from his time on the LNER

I am not far off starting the valve gear on the Coronation so I will post detailed photos when I build it.

    Hi Rob.
This drawing and the valvegear assembly diagram with the SEF "Schools" kit seem to tie in, and also look very similar to that on the Bachmann "N" Class RTR chassis I have, so it's helpful to me at least. I believe the "N" Class (and the "Schools" I think) were 'Pre-Bulleid' designs (Maunsell perhaps, my 'loco history' isn't too good!), although Bulleid certainly went his own way with valvegear designs, to the detriment of loco classes such as the W/C's, B-of-B's and M/N's, Walschaerts being substituted upon subsequent rebuilding under BR, removing at a stroke many of the problems encountered with the original design. I'll be watching with interest when you start the valvegear on the Coronation, every day's a 'school day!'
    Keith.

    Hi Keith,
I agree, on the everyday is a school day sentiment. I hope I never stop learning it's what keeps the brain fresh.
