For general information, probably of more interest to Australian modellers.
This site has a large number of kits for model railways primarily for the smaller scales but I have used their Diesel Sound card for one of my G Scale locos and it gives a realistic sound.

Most were featured in the old "electronics for Model railways" books (listed part way down the kits list) there is also a link to the MERG site.
The kits come with complete instructions and basically if you can use a soldering iron (there is a how to solder link in the list) and follow basic circuit diagrams.
The supplier is Australian based and when I dealt with them offered prompt and friendly service.
Disclaimer I have no connection to the owners at all other than being a customer.
