Firstly, thanks to all for their welcome!

I am 70 years old and retired, and due to myself and my wife both having some long term sight problems , we have stopped driving and sold our car, which works as our local bus services are good. This does limit my radius from home in south west Bedfordshire, to attend exhibitions, however i do have a good local model shop.

I model in 00 and am currently finalising a design for a 12ft x8ft round and round and branch junction layout to fit a room that I have free since moving house as a dedicated railway room. The room benefits from an outward opening door.
The layout will have minimal infrastructure that dates it such as stations, as I like to run multiple eras, currently I have stock for 1960-2, 1976-8, 1990-2, and 2006-8. Currently I am buying for 2014-16. So some infrastructure such as signal boxes and goods sheds will be removable.

My main interest is the WR main line in the home counties and I have devised an interesting timetable based on the relief lines and High Wycombe branch around Maidenhead.

The layout is going to be professionally built as far as baseboards, track, electrics and ballasting are concerned. I have to take this way, expensive as it is, because my prime interest is in operating, not building, and past experience on trying to build smaller layouts, none of which were a success, shows I do not have the skills necessary to do it myself.

This will be a once only chance to build a layout, I will not have an opportunity to do it again if this plan does not satisfy!

So as part of the planning I have been investigating DCC. Originally, I thought the cost of converting my loco collection ruled DCC out but I am finding that the reduced labour cost of labour for the build will compensate for the chipping cost, and this cost can be spread over a period of time.

The trouble is this has alerted me to the joys of Sound, so some of my collection is going to have to go to help pay for a limited number of sound Locos.

So the above is I hope sufficient to explain what I am about without boring you all!

    Best regards
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Lovely introduction, Sorry to hear about your eyesight I havd that problem as used to have an N Gauge Layout. I have sold that except for rolling stock and Locos, now gone into 16mm 32mm Gauge with an outdoor garden railway.Good luck with your project and DCC Sound is lovely as i have 2 N Gauge ones with sound. One of my electric 16mm locos has sound. Makes the experience worthwhile So realistic hope that helps.
    Regards,
    Gloria.

DCC sound is one of those things people seem to either love or hate, with not much ground in between the two states! Personally, I am in the 'love it' camp, as it addsa whole new dimension to operations. The usual settings for inertia and momentum with sound are much larger than non-sound decoders, but I have set all of my non-sound decoders to match, so all of my locos and units have the same challenges when it comes to stopping at the right place ... yes, I have perpetrated quite a lot of SPADS, but please don't tell on me!
