About eight years ago now I picked up a few WESTDALE kits, thinking it might be nice to build the odd coach for running on Lord Street, never thinking I’d ever buy any of the RTR offerings because of the cost....ok good idea but like a few people I succumbed to the odd purchase or two....three, oh ok so I bought a few............ Well I plan to mix up my builds from now on and try and complete a few. I did start a “B” set which needs finishing off, and I also started to paint up a GUV but have had a very on / off relationship with it, as there was an issue with the paint cracking and crinkling up in areas. Not really sure what the issue was but in the end I’ve stripped it back to bare metal and used the dremel on it to clean it up. so this will be the first one to complete to the bitter end as there’s no interior detailing to add. so here it is stripped and ready for priming.......again !!
The BR four wheeler CCT along with the standard GUV were cracking nice vehicles and I can still sense the musky smell of their interiors when they came on Longport PCD for unloading and loading catalogue return traffic conveyed in BRUTES. BRUTE stood for British Rail Universal Trolley Engineering which were based in Swindon works in an effort to keep the place going after the loco maintenance stopped.
Interesting info Paul over the weekend I sprayed the 42’ GUV with Tamiya fine White surface primer for metal (and plastic). I’ve had good results with this spray, more expensive than my normal go to spray can. Then after 24hrs I sprayed it with Phoenix Precision paints LMS Crimson Gloss and the roof was sprayed with a mixed up acrylic grey.....and yes I forgot to take pictures of the model in primer and adding the masking tape to do the roof So here it is fresh out of the drying booth ready for the next part of the build. Kim
Thanks Mark. I’ve used an airbrush on this one, but I’ve done a couple of B set coaches using the small rattle cans from Tamiya, with good results. Kim
I note Ellis has a westdale coach in stock right now. Dont know of it's the same as what you have. Toto
Yes saw that one Toto.....I’ve resisted....are you proud of me ? Paul, yes it is a loverly colour, makes a nice change getting maroon off my hands and not black.. ‘I’m thinking of having ago at lining this one, with paint .............
Kimbo, you disappoint me ...... far too much restraint being exercised there ...... where did you learn that from. certainly not from me. They look pretty straight forward and come up great. How many do you have to complete ?
So including the GUV I’ve got a B set (2 coaches, maroon) to finish off detailing, then there’s four more, a very mixed bag:- LMS PERIOD II BRAKE 3RD LMS PERIOD II 60’ OPEN 1ST LMS PERIOD II 50’ KITCHEN and the one I’m really looking forward to.... Pullman 1st Parlour Kitchen with a full detailed interior, seats, tables, table lamps etc....
Looks like you are going to be busy then Kimbo. The Pullman will make you focus. . Excellent stuff. Carry on good Sir.
Yes I might have a go at this Keith. I don’t think the resin lamps will stand up to being drilled out so will probably need to cut them off and make up new ones.....might just start this one next. Keep you posted.
You might give me some ideas too. I have two or three sets of Pullman sides and ends in nickel from Medley Models tucked away somewhere.
Obviously you can just use individual LED's for the lamps, or you could do it the way Hornby have, using a bunch of optic fibres, one to each lamp with one LED for each bunch of fibres and one fibre to each lamp. You'd probably have to make up each table lamp using a clear plastic rod and though I don't have (and have little experience of using) a lathe to turn them up, if it were me, I'd have a go at putting a short length of rod into a drill chuck and use a file or similar to 'turn' the rod to shape. Worth a try if you've no lathe! Keith.
Good idea Keith, and better still, Ralph has a lathe.....ohhh. ....I feel a mates rate deal coming on
Somewhere in the past I recall I posted a circuit and a few pics of the 'standard' PC boards I make up for coach lighting in all my coaching stock. Something like that plus pickups if not already part of the kit, will sort lighting power in each coach. Keith.
WESTDALE are very basic kits Keith so I will have to sort out pickups, should be easy enough as I add them to brake vans for the rear tail lamp.. Need to get the paintwork on this GUV sorted out and reassembled before opening the Pullman box.
