Yes I really need to buy a set... that and a decent chassis jig are items I will have to invest in.

Now the copper ring has been filed down into a half circle shape and a test fit on the boiler to see how it sits, the flat half of the ring is now against the boiler. With a little more fettling the ring can now be flattened straight and reformed with a 90 degree turn to flatten the other face which will mean we have a right angle of two flat faces and a quarter radius curve.

And with the other face filed down and the ring placed on the flat stone to iron out any kinks I started to form the radius, in fact at this stage a few test fits were needed and some further fine filing was needed, i have stopped just short of filing away three quarters of the original thickness as the piece is now starting to enter the realms of flimsy. Anyway this is where I am at the moment, so now to solder the ring in place on the boiler. The leg ends of the ring have already been trimmed away.

Thank you Sir Topham... its on the workbench now for soldering then once I've soldered in the first boiler band next to the smokebox / tubeplate ring it will make it all look passable.

this seems to be turning into a lot of work, but still look forward to seeing the result.

Although the instructions say to fit the boiler bands at either end before joining the boiler and smokebox, I think I will leave them until I have joined them together, unless you advise otherwise

Thanks for sure Paul but look at the side profile from the smokebox to the boiler on this picture I found.

Yes indeed although I have fitted the firebox end band... I did this to see how it all joined up. Note that on the two bands without the rib there is a wider one which goes against the firebox end of the boiler, this is because it has to cover the firebox front clothing so needs to be a tad wider.

Yes a lot of work and I did try a dry fix with some thin wire but wasn't that impressed with the look even if it could have been fillered with solder... seemed like a lot of work to me to get something which could be better.

The smokebox tube plate ring is on and after a little bit more solder cleaning which the camera has picked up it will do the biz, front boiler band added also.

The completed boiler unit sits down on its tabs and lines up with the firebox.

And the full on side profile view, tomorrow I shall work on the splashers and then the boiler / smokebox can be soldered in place.
