Now I could form the coal hopper and tank top as per the instructions, my tender will have its water vents on the outside of the bunker so that meant drilling the half etch marks I wanted out with a 1.6mm drill. I then soldered the hopper to the tank top.

Next step was to fit the tank top into the etch groove on the tender back and solder from the inside, after a bit of jiggery pokery I made the fit and filled the gaps on the angled hopped with generous amounts of solder. I now need to file the hopper front so the tender bulkhead fits properly but that will be tomorrows job.

That's all for tonight folks and a very enjoyable afternoon was had making this dream of a kit. I was happily surprised just how much had been achieved in an afternoon.

A typo Andy I meant to say 44422's old tender didn't have coal rails... looks like the keys on my laptop are wearing out.:avatar:

    Hi Yorkie,

A photo of the above from the side showing the coal chute and tender top would be handy. I'll be hitting the shed soon to start the same task so may miss any update. Looks pretty straight forward though so no great concerns.

Really taking form now and showing its characteristics.

    Nice work.

Taking a picture for you now Toto, I may well set up in the workshop so ping on skype if needed. As I suggested last night please ensure and take care when forming the hopper chute angles that the sides are not inadvertently drawn inwards when soldering. Take soldering is the solution with the chute joins.

    Thanks Yorkie,

I could be around 40 minutes before shed time as SWMBO has decided to nip out to the shops with spawn of SWMBO.

    I'm currently bonding with Lulu.

    Excellent Yorkie,

I have just been trying to visualise the above and you have just confirmed my understanding of it. As Tesco would say ...... every little helps :avatar:

Even before the chute goes in place, the whole structure has gained excellent strength and rigidity. It will be one very solid build when complete.
I'd suggest steel toe cap boots should be worn the further the build progresses. :avatar:

    Really good stuff.

    Cheers

Great stuff Toto... should I start issuing club cards for work boots then ? :avatar:

Right cup of tea then off to workbench I shall go.

Front bulkhead, fireman's tunnel, coal rails and castings are today's goal for installation.

    Cheers Yorkie

    Yes,

I have been looking ahead on the build as well as obviously concentrating on what's current and the castings definitely last. I had thought of soldering some on prior to final construction but then thought better of it. Just too risky with the amount of heat being potentially applied to the main etches.

It would be nice as the access to the piece is so much easier but a recipe for disaster I think.

    Keep the updates coming

This is the last of the progress build pictures because I my internet connection kept dropping today and in the end I threw the towel in and just carried on with the build. Anyway this was the tender front bulkhead with fireman's tunnel and lockers fabricated and ready to fit the the tender body.

And this is where I decided to complete the build target I set myself today and photograph everything on completion.

Front bulkhead was fitted without issue and then it was onto the rear bunker plate, the top edge beading and the bracket for the coal irons. I then fitted the coal rails and finally added the white metal castings.

I was quite pleased with the results of today's effort, everything fitted as it should and once the coal rails were installed I just had to file the corners flush.

And finally a close up of the beading detail. So that's it for the tank, focus will now turn to the chassis and inner frame.

I've also straightened that dodgy handrail out now.
