oh no not more ACE....... I picked up another Ace kit. Ive built this one before many years ago so its interesting to see any differences to a current version. boiler and firebox. pre rolled footplate etches. some funny tiger stripe discolouration on these. They came sealed like this more body etches chassis etch with similar tarnishing strangely the tender is spotless. comes complete with lbscr atlantic worksplates. This is a tyical ace kit of mix and match parts some of the castings
an improvement over the old kit. the snifting valve, whistle and safety valves are brass turnings. on the previous ace j6 kit i made the where whitemetal unfortunately there apears to be no wire for the brake gear or the handrails Compared to the old version of this kit the etches are thinner and much crisper. its just a shame there are no buffers, a missing safety valve, tender waterscoop dome missing and no wire.
Yes definitly. I bought it from an ebay seller who has quite a few ace kits and also some built ones which look suspiciously like the ones on mr ascoughs website. The lady in question lives 6 miles from his address and it was posted from the post office 5 mins walk from his adress. The packaging was then same as what he uses too. It was sold as brand new. I'm wondering if hes using a family member to sell less than perfect kits or seconds on Ebay slightly cheaper. There are several castings missing unfortunately
Hi Paul, I have seen the listing from that seller and reached the same conclusions as you . William is a bit notorious for packing mistakes and sadly by buying from her you have no come back as to the missing parts. Are there any indications on the etches as to the origins of the kit? The Gladiator kit that I am building is the ex George Norton kit but whether it originated with George or whether it was from the 7Models range that he absorbed in to hsi range I don't know. J6's seem to be a popular subject at the moment, previously I have only seen a couple of 7mm builds both from the Gladiator/Fourtrack/George Norton kit.
I know the history of this kit quite well having built one before. It's an old mcgowan models one although it apears to have been redrawn and any traces of the McGowan name erased. Coincidently within minutes of me posting on here I received a reply to my message and the missing parts have been found and promised to be sent to me. I am actually an experienced seller on ebay and run a business through it, so I am fully conversant with ebays rules. One thing i have learnt is that the customer nearly always wins in any cases and often unfairly. Based on this knowledge I feel quite confident that I could just send it back for a refund. It's not as described despite the seller not accepting returns. If the bits arrive I can deal with the tarnished etched and will be pretty happy to build it
That's good news Paul, it's nice to see a few brass turnings in there. I will look forward to you build as I plan a J6 for myself at some point and it's nice to have more than one option for the kit.
As before it may be some time. Struggling for time at present as I've been called back into work after working from home since march. It's amazing how commuting eats into your day. Having not been used to it I am completely shattered and slept for 11 straight hours last night. When things settle down I plan to get the bulleid completed. The j6 is in the stash with the clan, j69, and auto tank.
Haha yes and no floor. Luckily all the bits arrived in the post not long back in an envelope with William's handwritting on.
That's good to hear. To be fair, all my dealings with William have been good but I hear that others have not been quite so fortunate.
I've always found him helpful. He has sold me bits from kits before and supplied missing parts from kits I bought elsewhere so I cannot complain. Patients is sometimes needed as he isnt always the quickest to respond and I guess some people dont want to wait.
