A little project I started a while ago and had sat on the back burner is a model of the original Cheddleton Signal box that sat on the level crossing at the station. it never made preservation to my knowledge being burnt down in the late 1960’s? (Sure Yorkie or Fruit will correct me here) It’s a fairly small box, not too many levers this time, which sat at the back of the box. It also lacked some other common NSR features, such as an internal roof and finials! (Less to knock off!) anyway, here are some colour renders of what it should look like. the real box for comparison and my drawing of it. Now to print it in 7mm
The first print of the wooden structure failed.. i still have no idea.. it’s left a big tear in the wood work. Interestingly it’s left the bottom timber still in place? so after speaking to the collective 3D printing minds, it was suggested I slow my lift speed down, which for those following, that’s the speed the bed plate lifts at when pulling away from the FEP after the resin has been exposed between each layer. better second time. Made the wood structure a 9’hr print! Now for the roof and internal floor. to be continued….
Bit like Elton and Cresswell boxes really the S&T fitter had a nice little wooden hatch to crawl through and then bang his head of the locking table.
So last night the rest of the parts were removed from their scaffold and cured under the UV. The Porch had a little longer than the doors and windows. Just need to clean up the fitment of the porch to the main body as it’s standing proud. but more than happy with this model.
It appears I missed a little update on this so it may seem to skip a bit. however, to bring it up to date (yesterday) the box and base was primed in Halfords white spray. The base was done in grey then run through with a pink/grey terracotta colour for the mortar before adding a Vallejo Red Black for the lower brick. It needs another run over for the mortar again, but I do like the colour for the bricks.. something that was holding me back since the last update as to what colour and having the confidence. You will also notice the porch. Sitting the unpainted top on the base again. So I hit the main box with the colour. This one is actually a citadel colour from war gaming. Wish I could do something with that bowed window. Finally added in the windows.. now on with the Gulf red and roof. I really must then paint the base of Leek box (seen behind) and complete that project. Andy
Very nice. By printing fairly flat with a reasonably fast lift speed - as you found will lead to tearing. A 5 to 10 degree tilt can also help reduce the tear effect as the model will have a smaller crossection to to peel off. Paul
A little more progress..with the gulf red. I’ll look at the roof in the next day or so. Having issues with the gulf red rubbing off through handling. Odd.. Vallejo paints. Paul brooks suggested I varnish it.
Paul is spot on. Varnish should do the trick. I was a screen printer and used varnish to stop the metallics rubbing.
