    The humble 4F
Looks like a very nice kit
    Nice etches
Toto a few more wagons and you be itching to get to this.
And as Pete said in one of the other posts with a lot of these white metal parts glueing is the way to go.

I purchased a C11 4-4-2 tank that had been professionally built and then also professionally painted, from one of Jims etched kits in the U.K. It was offered for sale by the professional builder she is often featured in the model press it looked to be very well built and painted to museum standard, and the price wasn't much more than the kit value, I was very happy with it when it arrived it ran well, but to my surprised about 12 mths later the rear of the buffer beam and bunker parted company with the rest of the model one day whilst pulling a small train.
On inspection I found it was glued on with Super glue, on further inspection the entire model was constructed with super glues of various types including the Chassis. What looked like nice filets of solder were in fact super glue gel with model having been primed and painted it all looked perfect.
I ended up putting all the parts in very hot water and most of it turned back into a kit and I started again and soldered it all together
So the, so called professional builders use a lot of glue if it's good for them should be good for you just solder the parts that really need it like the Chassis and loco structure but a lot of the small parts glue is the way to go.

Looks like this kit is about to surface at last. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks after my coach build ( another connoisseur models kit ) is done.

This will be my first attempt at a tender loco and if the truth be known ..... it's the tender I am looking forward to most. Keep your eyes peeled as it's on it's way shortly.

    Cheers

The Fowler tender with it's straight sides should get you started on the build nicely.

    Hi Rob,

I've been through these instructions dozens of times since buying the kit and bit by bit they are falling into place. I think I have tackled about 85 % of the skill set over the last few builds and really the most challenging will be the forming of the smoke box and some of the smaller fiddly bits. I'm not too phased by it. I dare say it will present some challenges for me along the way but that's part of the learning process and the promotion onto more advanced kits.

I'll just take my time and not put myself under any undue pressure with it. All going well, it will be completed to a reasonable standard and have me keen to tackle the next build ( which looks like the other Ramsbottom but that could of course change ).

I'll have a look and see if there are any castings that I'd like to change out or addition items I'd like to add. Any opinions on that more than welcome.

    Cheers

If you really want to go to town on the brass work I think that MM1 models may do a super detail kit for their former JLRT 4F kit which they supply separately. Not cheap but good value in my opinion. - but then I spent around £250 or so on castings for my A6 tank

    Hi Rob,

I think super detailing is a little out of my depth for now anyway. Maybe just a couple of upgrades or enhancements would be ok. I'm looking at the tender axle boxes for example. My experience so far is that these items are usually amongst the first to become casualties so lost wax may offer a more durable solution for these.

As soon as the coach build is over Paul so you are looking at about a fortnight's time.

Outside of the MM1 SDK you may struggle to find lost wax castings for the tender axleboxes, unless Laurie Griffin does them? I haven't built a 4F so I have never really looked as to what ,ight be available for them as upgrades.

Andy at Ragstone has Fowler tenders in his range but I suspect that the axlebox castings will still be in whitemetal.

I haven't built Jims 4F but I did build his J39, I started with the tender and it went together like a dream. I also fitted pickups on the tender wheels and wired it through to the loco with a miniature 2 pin plug and socket so the tender could be removed for maintenance etc.

    Cheers, Pete.

I got it from a local electronics shop in Chesterfield but you can get them online. They are advertised regularly in the model mags. Or you could get some via PaulL from Merg if you ask him nicely, I imagine they are something they supply.

    Cheers, Pete.
