Episode 96 18 Painting Figures

Seems like ages since I did my last Gormo`s Shed, in fact, I think it was last year....????????

Welcome to the new season of Gormo`s Shed for 2018. We have a new look for the opening titles and end credits, thanks to about four different software programs and some original footage from The Strathspey Steam Railway at Aviemore in Scotland. A great little railway for a day out if you are in the area.

For this first episode of 2018, I have decided to do a little video on hand painting figures. In this case for my Bachmaan City Class GWR loco, quite a stunning loco in all respects, but devoid of a crew.......Sorry Ron.......I`m fixing it...

The cruel close up is in abundance throughout the video, however keep in mind that these figures 99% of the time are barely visible in the cab, and when they are, it`s difficult to get a really close look at them. The commercial figures that are available, really only achieve the same level of detail, due to time and money constraints during manufacturing. However, that said, when you place a figure into a cameo or scene or loco or a coach, it is more of a suggestion of life for the viewer, rather than an exact, perfect copy of a human being.

With that in mind, I can`t see the point of agonizing about the detail when the suggestion of detail will do.

Anyway you can assess my efforts in the video and maybe consider having a crack at it yourself. The thing to keep in mind is that if you stuff it up, you can easily paint over your mistakes, so no need to worry about anything with a pint sized figure.........just have a go.!!!!!

The colours I use are all artists acrylics and for flesh tones I am blending White, Red ( like Fire Engine Red) and Tan. Now the Tan colour to me is not what I would call Tan. It actually looks like Beige or a dark cream if you like.

The White is your base colour or carrier / bulk. A blob the size of a small coin would suffice, to which is added a match head quantity of Red. The Red will turn the mixture quite Pink. I would then add the Tan to tone it down. The tan is added in small quantities like the Red, until you get the tone you want. Peoples skin tones vary, so you too can vary the tones you blend.

Check the tone in natural light to make sure you`ve got it right.

It`s all trial and error Ed, and practice, but the thing to remember is that colours like dark Blue, Red, Yellow, Green and Black,( strong colours in other words), should only be added to White in very small quantities otherwise they will very quickly overpower the mixture. It`s better to work up to the colour you want from light to dark because it`s extremely difficult to go in the reverse without copious amounts of White paint.
