I was intending donning surgical gloves and smoothing it with my fingers.

One little trick you can employ in situations like this again in the future is drill a tiny hole into the back of the lamp iron bracket with a drill say 0.5mm taking care not to damage or part the fold lines then insert a short length of very thin wire say 0.3mm, once soldered up drill a corresponding hole into the resin or white metal to resin area and glue the lamp iron into place. This may well make a more stable mechanical fixing for such a tiny item... its sods law at some point it might well drop off otherwise.

Hi Yorkie .... thanks for that. these lamp irons have a wee peg at the back so I drill for the peg, in with the epoxy and sink the peg into the hole. I drill for a snug fit so even without epoxy, its held quite tight.

you'll see the one I'm talking about in the following pictures below.

the whistle bobber thingy ..... be it right or wrong ..... its now in where you see it.

the lamp iron bracket at the top of the boiler front ..... well secured in place. I made a fire box lever with a piece of brass rod as the white metal affair was simply too wek.

last up was the grab rail knob ( raided from my other Ramsbottom as there was not enough supplied ). Now I made the decision to fit it so the rail is level all way around the boiler front as shown on the picture on the box. Unfortunately this meant locating it mighty close to the door hinge. Their picture is a little inaccurate from the reality of the build but no big deal ..... it will work.

and the last one for now.

Next up ..... split the footplate from the chassis and start looking at fitting the two cab levers ( brake and reversing rod ) and also looking at the brake rigging set up ..... C'mon laurie Griffin ..... suspension springs are getting desperate now :avatar:

    cheers for now

Taking things as far as I can with the remaining elements .....

The hand rails have now been installed .....

A little cleaning up at the joint in the middle of the boiler still to be done with a small file etc ...

a little soldered joint to be made once every thing is final test fitted and painted ..... a bit cardboard to seperate the joint from the boiler whilst soldering the joint should protect the cast boiler fine.

    same on this side .....

Now .... drilling out the cab floor for the brake and reversing rod lever ......

    cheers

Jesus ....... I'm lying again ..... its not lever time yet ...... its filler time for the boiler ......

and first off I had to look out this .....

in order to fill in around this .......

    and this ......

and here where I hacked ..... erm delicately sliced the underside of the boiler in order to get the motor to fit .......

    and the other side .......

So now ..... walk mutley and return to mix up this stuff ...... after reading the destructions of course .......

    cheers for now

A tip for future loco builds. Assemble your boiler/smokebox and before you do anything else wrap a sheet of medium wet and dry around it with the sanding surface outwards and then rub your chimney/dome etc castings along it in the relevant bit until they bed down flat to the boiler. It will save most if not all filing post fixing.

Oh my goodness ..... fame ....... at last.

I'd like to thank my mother for having me, SWMBO for not being clever enough to get rid of me, my agent and of course my dog. ( whose now pinched my bed ).

They say everyone has 15 minutes of fame ..... how long is this up for :avatar:

Until I crack the password to remove it - must be a glitch :avatar:

A well deserved accolade, especially with a warts n all build

Ok .....ok ....... gloating over ..... back to the insults ..... and here's your first opportunity since my moment of superstardom ......:avatar:

I started with the milliput on the boiler .....

first the gashes on the under belly .....

    and the other side ....

as far as I am aware, I have no reason to worry about the overspill as it should sand off easy enough when set. tell me now if I am wrong. My theory is the more you try to work it when " wet " the bigger a pigs ear you'll make of it. just get it on, let set and sand tidy and smooth.

around the chimney and dome .......

and a wee hole filled where I got a bit excited with the Dremmel.

    now ..... leave to set.

When dry and sanded, the boiler assembly is good for its primer coat. I await my suspension springs from laurie to allow fitting and priming of the footplate section. then its disassembly of the driving gear from the chassis to allow that to be primed and the reassembly prior to finally fitting the brake rigging ..... oh ..... and the pick ups etc.

I'll be looking to start another build in amongst that little lot .... my coach beckons. just waiting for his nibs taking delivery of his ....... hopefully today and pete confirming that he is good to go.

    cheers for now

You haven't but it's much more work once it's dried.

Once you have it on as you have, dip your finger in some water and use it to smooth it out and remove some of the excess. It will reduce the filing element considerably

Just picked up on this Rob.

May be a bit late. If it takes a bit more effort then fair enough. I'll remember for next time. :avatar:

    Thanks though.

No show yet for the suspension springs from Laurie Griffin yet ...... :( hopefully tomorrow. I'll need to check on the milliput now and start sanding it down to a finish.

Not much to go on this until paint / primer time. ...... C'mon Laurie. :avatar:

I probably should have left it but it's done now. Just hope I can make a job of it and not end up with something worse. :avatar:

OK, still more work to be done on this as its a bit rough.

    and the other side ....

around the dome. It actually looks worse than it is but it does need more TLC.

and the same with the chimney .....

I'll give it some further attention in between doing elements of my current coach build and whilst still awaiting the suspension springs for the Ramsbottom.

    cheers for now
