Back in December I visited Doncaster toy and train fair and I picked up a couple of GWR open wagons, really nice but way out of the era and area I am modelling. So the first thing I did was to attack the paint and decals with my fibre glass pen. I left part of the "W" as it will show through the paint as worn and weathered. Next I masked of the upper body and sprayed the chassis matt black. I picked out the iron work in a dirty grey black then painted most of the planking bauxite, leaving some to be painted as new timber, which is about as far as I have got at the moment, as I need to get some meths to fix the new lettering. I have painted the inside and once the lettering is on I will give it some more weathering with dirt washes and powders. Cheers, Pete.
Hi Pete, looking really good. are you going to be using powders on this as well as repainting etc ? I am considering putting a small tool kit together for taking away with me when i head up north over the coming weeks and weathering a wagon or two may be a possibility. ( amongst other things like chipping some more loco's etc ) I'd be interested in seeing the use of weathering powders. Its all a bit beyond me at the moment. cheers toto
Hi Tom, yes I,m going to use weathering powders but I have a little more work to do on it first. There is a very good book called Weathering techniques by Martin Welche that I am using I highly recommend it. Pete.
Later, much later I,ve acquired some meths and have fixed my decals. Next up I slapped on some Modelmates weathering wash, whilst still damp I put some powders on. At the same time I attacked another wooden bodied wagon in basically the same way. 3 down loads more to do, I,ve not started the other GWR wagon yet, think I will do that next. Cheers for now, Pete.
Kimbo wrote: Hi Kim, no its a Colin Ashby kit made many years ago and sadly no longer made, they were basic and rewarded finessing, they were also really cheap for an O scale kit, if I remember right they cost about £10/£12, A$20ish, I would like to find out what happened to the moulds .
Hi Pete, Great job on the wagons. I like the replacement planks and various shades of finishing. top job. Toto
Hi Pete, I've not seen those kits before, a quick Google search for Colin Ashby turned up this:- http://www.rmweb.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=48333 And http://cooper-craft.co.uk/Pages/2/About-Us.html Kim
Thanks Tom, still got loads to do yet, I just wish I could concentrate on one thing at a time , easily distracted me! Hi Kim, very interesting links there, I can attest to the state of the plastic mouldings on the wagon underframes, I may still have some in my naughty drawer in the shed, I will have a look and take some photos if I have. Pete.
I have a couple more wagons to do once I have sorted my shed out, some of you may recall my other hobby, restoring vintage stationary engines, well at the moment my shed/workshop resembles a scrapyard with bits of engines all over the place, hopefully one of them will be finished soon and I can get some work space back and restart modelling, I have also treated myself to a new airbrush and I,m itching to use it, a wagon weathering would be an ideal start. Pete.
