Welcome to the wonderful world of model railways. A great hobby that will teach you many skills.

This thread is dedicated to the 'beginner' or 'new' modeller, to the world of model railways.

Most modellers start off with a basic train set, given to them by a family member or purchased it them self. It is all very well and good to start off with the oval of track that the set came with, but you may want something bigger, something much more functional, something more akin to what we see in the real world...

Throughout this thread, we go through the separate stages of building a simple model railway. Primarily it will take you from concept to completion. Links will be provided throughout the thread, to suppliers of all things model railway, from track planning software to scenic supplies. Please note that the content within, will apply to building any sized layout and scale, from a simple plank to a roundy - roundy (circular layout).

So, you have been given a 'train set', now what do you do with it...??

The answer to this question is, 'what do you want to do with it ?' Model railway layouts come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This can be seen in our Model Railways Layout topics :

In here you will find many different layouts by clicking on the various sub headings and scrolling through. This may even give you inspiration on building that dream layout. You may look at these layouts and think 'I can never do that...', but in reality, you can. There are some exceptional modellers on Platform 1 MRC, but like you, we started from a simple train set.

So, if you are new to railway modelling and haven't a clue where to start, read on.

    Cheers, Gary.
