I've now completed the conversion/upgrade of this Lima Class 117 DMU, all 3 cars are now electrically linked, internal lighting controlled by a function key on the decoder output, directional lighting operating front/rear from Red/White depending on direction selected. After a repaint in "Late DMU Green" (these units were 'borrowed' from the Western Region by the Southern whilst the Kent Coast Electrification programme was ongoing I understand, hence the darker 'GWR Green'!) and decals applied, with the possible exception of touching in the linking plugs/sockets between cars with the green, they are complete and operational. Here's how they look in both light and dark conditions.

Finally the trailing car, this being the one modified to correct Lima's error, using the "Silver Fox" conversion kit.

Now that is an interesting project to follow Keith and the DMU looks great all illuminated. DMU and EMU's were painted in two versions of green before the Corporate Rail Blue period, the first green livery was applied from the early mid 1950's (early Derby lightweights particularly and on the Southern Region e.g 4COR, 2NOL, 2BIL 4HAL emus) was Light Brunswick Green BS 381C 225, this livery on all pre 1960 built DMU's carried a mid cream colour lining edged upper and lower in a 1/8 inch outer thin black band, speed whiskers had the same colourway. Southern EMU's didn't have the lining and were just plain all over green. Some confusion arises with ex Southern Railway EMU's during the early 1950's prior to repaint into BTC livery spec as these units still carried the Southern Railway Malachite Green colour which is not dissimilar to Light Brunswick. When units started to carry half yellow speed warning panels in the early 1960's the green was changed to a darker colour which was based on the BR Spec 55A Diesel green... the near tonal equivalent to that is Deep Bronze Green BS381C 224, this colour was used to paint early Series 1 Land rovers. The lining (where applied) was a pale cream unlike Maroon Mark 1 coaches which used a 50 /50 mix of Keep's signing paint colours Deep Cream and Light Buff. It is completely incorrect for enthusiasts to believe that steam or diesel engines in BR days were ever painted Deep Brunswick Green BS381C 227, it may have been an early pre 1923 GWR colour and GWR engine green often changed tone but generally late post war GWR livery was Deep Bronze Green which was adopted as the BTC standard (BR Spec 55A) for passenger locos after 1948. Hope this info is of use to folk and finally us modelers can get away with using paint that "looks" the part because deep colours always appear so much darker on small objects... a trick of the light.
