Some late night investigation found the intermittent short on the first track testing, it was only occasionally causing the DCC to flicker so I knew it could not be to serious fault. Turns out the ride height was to low, by adding a small nylon washer to the underside of the bogies the issue has gone away .

so early this morning I did another track test session and all went well. I’ll post up the second video later as there’s a bit of speed testing going on as well as normal running.

I’m very impressed. Not just with the locos, but the rolling stock and layout! That is a set up to be proud of.

out of interest, who makes the tanks and the minerals?

    Andy.
Tank wagons are Heljan, all purchased as red models then heavily weathered and logos changed.
Minerals are Lion heart and Dapol
Class 20 on the incline is holding a rake of Accurascale 24T hoppers

    Ah right.

I did wonder if the minerals were reworked Lima models as i recall someone doing a batch recently but couldn’t recall if it was yourself or someone else?

I did do some Lima ones for Roger to go with his Terrier loco....nice models when converted but if you mix them up in a rake of Dapol or Lion heart they don’t look correct.

Popped around to Pauls today to check if the Hymeks would handle his tighter unifrog Peco pointwork, which they did with no issues.

I like the 03 in the background. First diesel I ever worked on...
Didn’t get chance to check out the pipe wagon today. (But I did see the owner)
I’ll see if he has any photos.

I’ve weathered the chassis slightly on the pair, still not sure if I will dirty up the body work.......what do people think?

some more running tests, this time on Ralph’s garden layout.

I am not a fan of weathering a project heavily straight after I`ve put in a good amount of time and effort to create something different.
I would suggest staying with your light weathering until you`ve had time to admire your work and bask in it`s beauty for a while, and then maybe after some careful consideration dirty it up a little.

I remember the Class 87 electrics when they were brand new and looked bright and shiny hauling 12 coaches of air conditioned Mark 2 e stock on the Manchester Picc- Euston expresses, a week later you'd see them with brake dust, grime and dark stain marks along the bodyside as if someone on an opposite train had discharged the contents of toilet tank at 100 mph, they soon looked work worn. I also saw D5063 standing on the diesel depot at Crewe having just been repainted in a nice shiny Rail Blue, 63 was allocated to Stoke Division and a couple years later looked a wreck with faded paintwork, my spotters book from 1972 records me seeing Hymeks 7000/4/11/23/27/31/38/84/97 and 7100 , from memory they were all very dirt stained with oil, faded paintwork and emitted a high pitched whine and lots of nasty particle emissions... I can specifically recall the D numbers being over painted with a thin brush coat of Rail Blue and the numbers just picked out with aluminium paint.

I appreciate this doesn't help you decide the finish but as Gormo says it seems such a shame to degrade a pristine finish from the start, maybe seal the loco with a good varnish and then apply weathering over that which could be removed if desired.

Cheers Gormo , Paul , for your thoughts

A bit more research has un covered this video, with 7017 in both green and blue livery, plus others, I’m starting to lean towards a clean finish, might just add a small amount of black around the exhaust and fan areas and review them on the track...
