PLEASE SEE AMMENDMENT TO THIS THREAD. ORIGINALLY THOUGHT I'D ORDERED A BULLHEID Q1 KIT BUT MADE AN ARSE OF IT. ITS A LNER THOMPSON Q1 / 1 ..... 0-8-0 TANK LOCOMOTIVE. I'LL KEEP IT ANYWAY. I've deleted the posts relevant to the previous model and replaced with the above explanation. Apologies PS photos will follow later
OK ..... the pictures. Now .... a little history ...... given this is an engine that I have never wanted and has been ordered in error, I thought I'd give this a special name for which plates will be made up for it shortly. from this day forward, the only engine to officially be put in my shed orphanage .... it shall be known as the LNER Thompson Q1 0-8-0 tank " Nobodies Child " ahem ..... nothing to do with the Alexander Brothers hit from many decades ago . ... The who ........ anyway ... here we go out of the box ..... it even has that kind of " face that only a mother could love " a bit like Dundee really. typical wordy instructions .... with a little light relief through exploded diagrams ....... individual bags of white metal cast parts which to be fair .... look quite crisp. same with the lost wax castings ...... Nickle silver chassis then on to the etched brass of which there is quite a bit for a tank locomotive. again look in goof condition and nicely done ...... and some more ..... and i kept this until last s I wanted to remember to point something out which I dare say is not unique but certainly a little different from other kits that I have seen .... the cab sides and roof come as one big etch which will need folded / formed. Hmmmmm ..... interesting. there is also a preformed boiler which I never photographed, i'm sure that you have all seen them by now. anyway ..... thats yer lot ...... Nobody's child it will be toto
What more can I say, and it arrived on the day that SWMBO was home as well, there are script writers that wouldn't dare write this Just as well you didn't send away to Slaters for the real Q1's wheels. Yorkie must be laughing his socks off Paul
Yes it did but SWMBO and spawn of SWMBO were out shopping for essentials ....... I can write that book. oh how great am I.
Not the Q1 I was thinking? (No im not taking the p*ss) I was picturing a long loco with a tender (yeah, I think that’s an O4 I’m thinking of...) good job I’m not ordering either!
Looks a nice kit Toto. Not sure about the cab roof been part of the sides is there a detailed boiler back head?
Hi Kimbo, I'd need to check further. There is a back head but I dont know how much detail they provide via separate castings. I'll have a look.
Not sure Toto, I can categorically say that Connoisseur Models don't but if they did they would probably be the best steam boilers in the world.
I'm beginning to take to this wee tankie. Which means it could start rising towards the top of the pile. there again, the javelin black 5 and the ACE D49 shire are under scrutiny for after the 4F build as well. I have got into Dundee's head with the D49. £179.00 makes it on the right side of the financially viable argument as well. Toto
Well a Black Five would be a very attractive project ... oh dearie me I'm starting to feel a need to find the phone number for Tower Models. Toto if I were you I'd gently encourage Dundee to buy a Q1 ... it matters not if its the Bulleid or LNER variety because Tower may well only have one Black Five left in stock.
Ohhhhh boy ..... don't blame it on me when Mrs Yorkie finds out. compare the price with the gladiator offering as well. I haven't done that yet but I must admit, I like the javelin version. Not to say there is anything wrong with the Gladiator kit. I'll need to check the prices out. Cheers Toto
Just checked ... £395,00 with three options long or short boilers and long wheel base. Sounds good but ...... out of stock, javelin kits being retired although there may be a possibility of a limited final run. Orders being taken. Now ..... Gladiator ..... Not your lucky day ...... not even listed. In fact .... now I think about it .... my second one is an Acme kit .... not a Gladiator ..... apologies. you could try phoning him, he did have some miscellaneous leftover stock before selling up. Discounted as well. It's just a case of persuading him to check his shed / attic or whatever ........ you may just be lucky. Toto
Gladiator didn't buy the rights to Javelin when they purchased the range so I understand the Black Five went to Tower Models who are / were the outlet for sales... he has stuck a tenner on the price since a couple of weeks ago, still not bad value tho. It looks like this pre reserve idea for a re run of just two kits is a way of hiking the price up, its no big deal to do a re run for five kits ten kits or twenty kits... I wonder if they are thinking there won't be a big uptake for this one.
I'd be surprised as they are nice looking kits and popular loco's. Again, I've not built one yet so maybe they are not the best of builds but I really don't think so ...... I'm sure by looking at it that there will be far worse. I am looking forward to it and it ain't that far away. I suspect that if the 4F is successful and I get the confidence that I think I will ...... the black five will be close if not hot on the tracks of it. worth considering. On a more budget freindly note ..... so is ACE's D49, even if your " scene " does not include it, I think it could be a reasonable build for the money. cheers toto
Damn there out of stock . I can go to bed and not have to sleep with one eye open and wear body armour. Black 5 is a nice thought, but probably too big for me, the D49 would be ok but I'd prefer either Jims D32 or an ACE K4, then again waiting for the relaunch of the Lochgorm kits range scheduled for the Perth Model Show in June - may have to wait a bit longer Paul
