    Yes,

I'd second that. Initially I was blinded by the layout of a lifetime and although progress has been made on it, it's cost me a lot more in an aborted work ( and materials )than it would have if I'd taken the same advice and started on something smaller.

A plank may only take you a few months to complete depending on how much time you can devote to it. Then you'll have sharpened many of the skills that you'll be able to take forward to the " big one " :avatar:

There again, if you just want to go for gold ........ Then dive right in. It's your choice ...... And your railway ( rule one applies ) :avatar:

Good luck which ever way you decide to go. There will always be a source of help here should you need it.

    Cheers

    Toto.

I quite like the idea of the plank challenge. I might give that a go. Thinking about it, yes, I will cover all of the bases, but on a smaller piece, so I will learn my strengths and weaknesses, and hopefully anything that proves to be a problem can be overcome when I get on to the bigger beastie.

One great aspect of the hobby now is forums (insert Platform 1 MRC here). I know when I first started in model railways, it was the Hornby and Lima catalogues that had the dream layouts on the cover, and boy, didn't I want to replicate what I saw ! Modelling was so much harder back then compared to now.

Now you are here on P1MRC, you can have answers to any question within the hour, sometimes minutes. We all don't stop learning how to build a better railway, how to detail, how to weather, how to scratchbuild etc etc, from all the advice that comes forth here from a quality bunch of modellers with eons of experience between them/us.

So, when your ready and advice is what you need, you are in good company here ! Remember, knowledge is everything and here, it is for free !

As Toto has already suggested, have a go at a plank layout first up to hone your skills. There is plenty of ideas for building planks here : http://www.platform1mrc.com/view_topic.php?id=839&forum_id=77

    Cheers, Gary.

Hi Hamish i reckon the competition plonk ...? ... sorry 'plank' (it comes from living in Spain) would be ideal for you and you could easily plan it as a module to join a larger layout ... it will be more achievable doing the larger scheme in sections so ... go into Anyrail ... design (with advice) a large layout then divide it by drawing lines across it to make modules ... pick one and build it ...ish ... the dream has started and ... you can do it
