Hi all I've got quite a few old Airfix wagon kits and the original decals are brittle and past their best, does anyone know how to get replacements? Ian Attached files
Might be able to help you out there Ian. I've got a lot hanging around somewhere in the bedroom. Let me know what you want and I'll see if I can find them.
Thanks Bittern I'm currently down 2 oval Esso logos and a similar number of white stripes for the mineral wagons. I've been cannibalising my other kits. It would be much appreciated but there's no immediate urgency. Ian
Hi Ian On the transfers, try seeing if you can get them to loosen in water then use decalfix to see if they soften. Paul
Thanks for moving the thread Paul ref the decals they actually break up when wetting them, to be expected I suppose some are around 50 years old. Cheers Bittern I hope I can do you a favour some time.
Had a look in the bedroom and so far have come up with 6 sets for the Mineral wagon, one set for the Brake van but nothing for the Esso's. That may change as I have to stay in waiting for the plumber as my water heater decided to die on me yesterday. Going back to the Esso's, I have not seen any of them yet but have seen about 4 or 5 sets for Regent if they will do and I'm sure there are some more Brake van ones around somewhere. I really do need to have a good sort out so that I can bring the work desk back into operation. If you could see the room you would understand. Thank goodness there is no SWMBO. She would being hopping mad. The advantage (or disadvantages) of living alone.
Thanks for your efforts Bittern the Regents would be fine, there must be a way I can recompense you, let me know. Ian
Many thanks I'll endeavor to post pictures of the results. Ian ps here's another one to weather Attached files
Interestingly, Hattons are selling the kits under the Dapol / Kitmaster label for about the same price as the sticker on your box. Last year I made the brake van kit up. Hornby wheels, but could do with top hat bearings fitted to make it run smoother. Paul
If the Airfix transfers are too old and brittle to use, you could buy equivalent and accurate markings from Cambridge Custom Transfers and Fox Transfers. I bought a whole heap of Esso ovals and alternative numbers for the class B tank wagon (I have several of the kits to build rake of them - only one completed so far!).
Hi Paul/SRman got 8 various kits for £15 on that well known auction site and only one was missing it's plastic wheels. I'm fitting Hornby replacement ones on them all and most are ok but one squeaks .... thanks for the info ref transfers I'll make a note, Bittern has kindly sent me some so hopefully ok. Like what you've done with the brake van Paul what did you use for the hand rails? Ian
Hi Ian For the hand rails, I use a selection of wire, from paper clips, solid telephone wire, or jewelry wire from Hobby Craft - comes in various sizes and colours http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/jewellery-making/stringing-materials/jewellery-wires I think I used wire < 0.4mm diameter, as that is the size of the drill still in my pin vice Also used the same to make up hangers for the brake shoes - although you can't see them, but the brake shoes more in line with the wheels. Paul
Hi Paul good point about the brake shoes I'll try and incorporate the idea on future builds fumbling thumbs permitting. Ian
