So another OMWB design is the L&M. For some unknown reason, I have locos and coaches in 009 and O-16.5 scales, but there is a lack of anything to go with them building wise. The fantastic plans of Bob Gratton from his “bible” on the L&M gave me food for thought. I’d also had some plans given to me a number of years earlier by a gent who made the model sat in Hulme End station, a Mr Holroyd, so between the two, what I didn’t have from one, I actually had from the other. 3D graphics package at the ready, 3D printer on standby.... at the time of writing, some remain as prototype artwork only as I have not been able to afford the costs of the two biggest items from Hulme End station, however they are available on the shapeways link in 4mm and 7mm scales if anyone would like one. The small waiting room found at Thor’s Cave, Butterton and Wetton Mill. CAD drawings. Actual 009 model in white plastic and the end finials
Hulme End coaling stage. Hulme End water tower. Beeston Tor cafe (Later made double length and to this day survives as a camping barn) Publicity photo sent to me from Model Rail magazine.
CAD artwork for Hulme End Station building and Engine shed. The station building still stands to this day, so modern reference photos and the originals and drawings are a plenty, but the engine shed was recovered in the 1950’s, it also lost its lantern air vents, and photo reference for these was something rare. The original shed frame was dismantled in the early 2000’s to make way for a new tea room facility. Some of the original support metal work was retained within the new RSJ version, which made current reference difficult. One question that was very hard to solve was -how were the doors secured? Was there a rear access door? Even Bob Gratton couldn’t answer these questions, and admitted that’s why they were omitted from his book. Hopefully these may give someone some inspiration for a narrow gauge line with the recent release of the Baldwin tank. Or hopefully we actually get some RTR L&M in the near future.
Had to walk a good length of the L&MVLR as part of my geology A level, studying the rock formations, spoil heaps (at that time they were a good source of Copper and Iron pyrites - fools gold) and lots of limestone and millstone grit. Great scenery and excellent location for a railway. Paul
A long while ago I planned a O16.5 layout (freelance) with the station building loosely based on Hulme End but foreshortened. Its gone to live in Kent now as the project got waylaid by other things. Cheer's, Pete.
Lovely model Pete. I seem to have seen it somewhere else recently? I already have a scratch built one in O-16.5 that featured in an article in model rail a number of years ago. I will have to dig the photos out. Also made one end of the tunnel mouth. I’ve considered also making the mouths in 3D, but never got around to it.

Aye we had to scramble through to find decent samples, and draw / map the geological features - I'm useless at drawing, was then and am still as good , but all that limestone must have made its mark with the thick mashed up rock layers of Another Bridge. Mind you the most impressive one I saw was in Wales, imagine a nice beach with ripples, got it, now picture that at an 85 degree angle, it didn't help that we had just had a liquid lunch, and we did need to check whether it was us or the rock face that was the wrong way up. Certainly allows for a good mixture of traffic, Copper and Iron ore, Limestone and Millstone as well as sheep etc. Paul
Sounds great stuff Dundee Paul... many times I get that 85 degree feeling too. There was a creamery at Ecton as well and about 30 years ago I went exploring around the old site, it was still possible to see to line of where the creamery siding was, even the dock at the end. This is where those famous pictures taken across the valley of milk tankers on the narrow gauge transporter wagons stood near the loading shed was taken. Yup Another Bridge is coming along great... how about having container trains as well transporting all of Toto's kits to the works for building up? Should be a long term traffic flow there.
Quite odd that... there is a bloke walks on to the platform at Waterhouses. Many of my family have watched it and said that it’s me! Obviously impossible, but side ways on, stance and build etc it’s my double... only for dad to then find we have a Staffs connection in that area in the family tree. I do wonder if.......
