I have been detailing up a Wrenn (ex-Dublo) R1 0-6-0T, although it still has a way to go. This one was a sufficiently good runner for me to revitalise it with a neo-magnet and DCC conversion (easy on this particular type of motor). I also fitted a neo-magnet into a Dublo (so-called) SR EMU but that was less successful. Sure, it made the motor run very much better than before, but it still has the problem of lifting the leading axle off the track if started too suddenly, and a new problem: the new magnet is so powerful it attracts the tinplate sides! The result is that every so often, the body glues itself to the motor bogie side and the unit travels at an angle until it gets to a bend, where it then derails. I haven't found a way around this yet. I also have plans to convert to DCC a Wrenn West Country (ex-Barnstaple) that I repainted and renamed. That's a project that will need a lot of bravery on my part, with drilling out the uninsulated brush hole and probably using some heat-shrink tubing on the brush holder. I have a neo-magnet ready to install too.
I may get brave enough and try that yet , and would probably use a TCS T1 decoder, unless anyone has a better suggestion - there is plenty of room for a sound decoder. Paul
Paul, SRMan your both braver than me! I've been asked a few times to convert older models but as with split chassis models the end result, after spending so much time machining bits and bobs, is not always satisfactory. Kim
The split chassis are not too bad as their power consumption is relatively low. I agree with Paul's choice of TCS T1 decoder as they are quite robust and also covered by the "goof proof" warranty. I used T1s for my double Black Beetle motored underground sets (one decoder for two motors), and also for my double motored (pre-ringfield) Triang Hymek.
Some interesting models there, Ian. They bring back a few memories. Gotta love that original oil bottle in the last photo. My very first Triang train set had one of those in it. The rest of the set, from their Primary Series, had a maroon steeple cab electric 0-4-0 (the one with the plastic pantograph), two grey open wagons and a green van, all four-wheelers with a rather continental look to them. The track was Series 3.
Hi SRman prior to coming to Spain some of the stock had been stored in our conservatory with condensation issues ... so spent 4 hours cleaning, de-rusting and sevicing the lot. Trying to get a video sorted but kinda hard on the floor of our apartment ... my knees, back, arms and head no longer do 'getting down/up'. I've got a green working steeple cab and an E2 with catenary but it's where/how to run them ... we'll see. Ian
I've been asked (tasked?) by his flounderness the scotchman to do a video of some trains running but .... having attempted an unsuccsesful trial run on the floor of our lounge a rethink is in order so ... patience and in a few (or more days) I hope to have it sorted ... the theme? ... pre Hornby thingys ... watch this space ... Ian
Hi Ian At least when you make the video, the loco doesn't have far to fall, unlike his flounderships class 33 Paul
It's ok for him Paul he being a 'rubber gauger' n'all .. mines more likely to get crushed when my knees give way ... Ian
Stay orf the tinto then and your knees will work as opposed to them being like a couple of universal ball joints.
Film studio designed... directors chair and megaphone on way ... hip replacement booked ... script to be adlibbed. Unfortunately can't film layout on the marble floor as it separates at the slightest movement so ... ! ... Ian
Think I'm gonna need help from the Frank Capola of Platform1mrc ... to date I've got a Samsung phone with a camera ... Toto what have you started ... I'm already in trouble with the other 5/8ths after telling her she needs to get a grip ....
