Hi To the forum. Get settled in then come back and tell us a bit about yourself. I hope you enjoy the journey through our hobby with us. Cheers Toto
Hi eddien9750 and to the platform settle down with a favoured tipple and enjoy the journey ... have a go at posting its easy. Ian vt
style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"Thank you for your welcome. style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"I am a novice to model rail, but I hope to increase my knowledge by joining. style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"Unfortunately I will probably not contribute very much at the moment. I shall be more of a parasite, living off everyone else.... style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"I have started a loft layout. It is about 25 feet in length and 2 and a half feet in width, running down two sides of the loft. It is joined at each end with 6 foot lenghts. style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"This gives me a walkway down the middle of the loft so I can access the whole layout. It will be DCC controlled, and I have some track already laid and tested. So far so good.I have even started some basic landscaping, and I can assure you it is very basic.... I shall endeavour to post its progress as it grows, and you never know I might even contribute something along the way. Thanks to all
No worries, I hope you manage to get any information that you need. Feel free to absorb yourself in as much as you want. Eventually I'm sure you'll be the contributor as well. That only comes with a bit experience and knowledge. Delighted to have your introduction. I'm not sure what's happened with your text on your post. I'll have a look into it as there seems to be a lot of coding there. Don't worry about that though. I'll get to the bottom of that. Cheers for now. Toto
eddiden9750 and to the forum. That sounds like some size of layout your going to build. Any questions you have, just ask, were always glad to help - if we can, or point you in a direction you weren't quite expecting. When you're ready, start a layout thread, where you can start the story of your railway empire, from the first nail to the last chimney pot. It's surprising how many twists and turns a layout can go through before you that final dream layout, then its time to start again Once again welcome to the forum. Paul
Thanks to you all for your welcome. I do not know what happened to the text, at first I thought I have only been on the site for five minutes and broken it already.... I do look forward to sharing my journey with you all.
It's pretty hard to permanently break the site ........ I have given it my best shot in the past though. Looking forward to seeing where you take us. Cheers for now Toto
Hi eddien9750 and welcome to the forum , good intro! your layout project sounds very interesting can't wait to see how it progresses. Cheer's, Pete.
Hi and welcome. Sounds like quite a layout you're starting out on, and don't worry about being a novice, we were all there at some time, no-one knows it all and we all learn a little every day. I've a loft layout myself, though about half the length of yours, best thing about loft layouts is I can go up there anytime, it's not weather dependant which is a big plus! Enjoy the forum, Keith.
Toto wrote: Hi Again, I'm trying to get the hang of posting. I only hope I am doing this correctly? I have decided to name my layout after the farm my mother was brought up on. It was a place called Tarry Mill near Abroath on the east coast of Scotland. The layout is not going to be modelled on anything specific to that region, in fact it is going to be entirely fictitious.Something entirely from my imagination. That will be scary.... I have attached my first attempt at scenery, it is supposed to be a cutting through rock. It was all made from expanding foam, then sprayed with primer to simulate a type of grey rock. I would appreciate any comments anyone would care to give. Eddie Attached files
Hi Eddie, Looks fine from where I am sitting. Expanding foam ..... Is that the type spayed from a can ? A couple of close ups would be good. Certainly looks the part.
Hi Toto, You are correct, it is a spray can. You have to careful with it as it does expand quite a bit. I have laid some more today. I will start shaping it tomorrow. I find using a knife as well as pulling bits off with my fingers works quite well. I will try and get a couple of close ups and post them. Eddie
Good man. I never thought of using that stuff. we use something similar for sealing cable ducts in substations. I'll need to keep my eyes open for it.
G'day eddien 9750, Welcome aboard from sunny Sydney. As you have already seen, there are plenty of great topics, layouts and the members here are a friendly lot. Looks like you are well under way with the layout build and I'll be looking forward to reading more about it in the Layout topics section. Right now, kick back and enjoy the camaraderie and banter that is P1MRC ! Cheers, Gary.
Hi Gary, Thanks for your welcome. It's certainly not sunny here (Scotland)... I have a the beginnings of a loft layout called 'Tarry Mill', as I am a newcomer I'm still learning, but I am glad I found this forum, it's going to teach me a lot. I am starting to put some pics of the layout together and I will start posting them soon. I take it the best place for them is the Members Layouts section? Thanks again for your welcome, and have a good day. Eddie
Hi Eddie Have a look at 2" (sorry 50mm - for the younger viewers) insulation foam, it sticks well with PVA, carves easily and provides a stable surface for track. You may find this video interesting https://youtu.be/Mpko5rxM9pI Paul
Hi Paul, Thanks for that video link, it was fascinating. I do have some foam insulation boards, and I am in the process of constructing a hill with a tunnel. see the attached pic. The video pointed me in the right direction, as I was unsure of how best to carve it. Now I know......Thank you. I used the expanding foam to fill the gap between the house eaves and the raised section of the railway as it the quickest way I could think of. I'm not sure if it would work as well in a free standing situation. That is where the insulation boards would work I think Thanks again for the tip. Eddie Attached files
Hi Toto, I have attached a close up pic as you requested. I hope there is enough detail for you? Eddie Attached files
