I purchased an Easybuild kit from Shawn Kay recently as I understood the BRCW Class 104 kit was a limited run which basically meant when they were gone they were gone, Shawn explained that that was the case but due to new tooling investment at Easybuild the 104 was now part of the permenant sales list. So I got a three car set which Shawn kindly delivered on his way...<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[I’ve got 5 different wagons to assemble C2 and C3 opens, D1 and D2 Bolsters and the P6 Coal hopper, so had to decide which to start with and just for the %^$£ of it choose the P6 hopper – it’s just a bit different.<br />
<br />
It’s pretty basic: body and chassis. 8 bottom doors, axle boxes and brake gear along with a 3 point axle compensation system.   I forgot to add the axle boxes to the photo!<br />

Was an old island kitchen bench, set up a little higher for either standing at, or sitting on my tall chairs from our old house. A re-purposed Ikea shoe rack turned upside down and set off the bench a bit.       <content:encoded><![CDATA[Starting a slow burner thread here which won&#039;t be getting underway just yet due to other more important stuff on the bench, however here is what I grabbed out of the bargain bin a couple days ago. The box is massive for what it does... I think I&#039;ll put a carrier handle and a pair of mini wheels on it and use it as a suitcase... not that I&#039;m going on holiday anytime soon.<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Here are a couple of nice chunky tank engines which will run on the Leek layout, the Fowler tank still has work to finish it and the other one a Stanier 2-6-4 is a current work in progress. The coach behind is an LMS Period 2 nine compartment non corridor which needs the roof triming to size, it will run as a three coach set with a Period 3 Third and a Brake Third which was the usual set formation of Churnet line trains in later years before DMU&#039;s arrived at Macclesfield shed... and yes I am...<br />

but has anyone here done one already and converted to servo power thus giving it a defined on/off when required by setting rather than the random push button it was designed with?<br />

my reasons for thinking of changing to servo is a quicker, quieter and smoother control that offers the bounce (which Dapol’s own motor doesn’t give) <br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Some years back I acquired a Lima DMU 3 car set at auction.<br />
The motor coach needed some restoration to the body and chassis which eventually proved successful.<br />
At the time the motor and gearbox were working fine, so no need to open it up.......using the old <i>&quot; If it ain`t broke, don`t fix it logic &quot;.</i><br />
Just over the last couple of running sessions the DMU was not running as smoothly as normal, and indeed in some cases it was stalling.<br />
Power was still getting through to the motor, but...<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[My R.651 Rocket DCC conversion has claimed one decoder and tried to claim another which has short circuit protection.<br />
<br />
The problem seems to be the carbon brushes, they have a coating of copper coloured conductive surface on them that is breaking up and causing havoc on the commutator.<br />

Here is a magnified picture of the X.500 motor brushes, similar to a Tri-ang XT60 brush, the part circled shows part of the copper layer peeling away to the left, underneath a crumbly dark material probably...<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[I am in the process of fitting a DCC decoder to one of these locos and whilst working out how to dismantle this little beast, which was quite tricky, I have one part that was released made of a folded piece of thin rigid plastic sheet, possibly for insulation somewhere that I cannot find where it was fitted, it almost appeared out of thin air.<br />
<br />
Marks on the underside side suggest it has expired adhesive on that face, that almost tallies with the rear of the X.500 motor on the face shown...<br />

      <content:encoded><![CDATA[Today I decided to revisit these Sidelines non corridor coaches which have been a back burner project for far too long now, The coaches are LMS Period 3 Brake Third to D1906, Period 3 nine Compartment Third to D1964 and Period 2 Composite to D1734. The first two are not far complete externally but need interiors and the focus of today was to punch a hole in the building of the Period 2 bodysides to form a complete bodshell....<br />
