I've been somewhat scared of DCC, having only really been a DC guy for the last 50 years. But as I'm building a new layout I thought I should at least check it out. Really don't know why I was so concerned. Did some digging on the web, and decided as (I'm in the US and) I will at some point need some pointers from local model shops and users that I'd go with NCE. A couple of weeks ago I purchased a "Power Cab" and half a dozen (non-sound) decoders. Using some help from Hornby web-site and You-Tube, I now have some older loco's (Non DCC Ready) fitted and running, amazed at how easy it was! Just got some 8 Pin decoders (back ordered) yesterday, so will work on getting a few DCC Ready Loco's set up. Anyone wondering if I really have taken the plunge ... added investment includes a 5amp booster and and a Pro Cab, and a USB port board. Thinking I may need some help adding other accessories, particularly points and signals, but will (I'm sure) get there as the layout progresses.
You wont go wrong with the NCE .... I have both power and pro cabs and they are great. Loads of accessories can be used with them. As far as decoders go, I used a lot of lens silver and Hattons own decoders. Not so keen on Hornby. Their current load rating is not so good. I know that Keith ( of this parish ) uses Lais deciders which are very reasonably priced and seem to perform ok as well. I'm sure most if not all of your DCC questions can be answered right here. Glad you have adjusted to it so quickly. Cheers Toto
Hornby also had an issue at one point with the wires/solder joints breaking and having to re do them to the board. No great shakes for some, but annoying none the less. Welcome to the “club” Steve. Wait till you take the plunge with that first sound decoder.. there is no going back then, the diesel horn or steam whistle mixed with the engine throb or exhaust beat as your pounding along. ( we have an outdoor line and it’s great listening to them go round the yard.) Andy
Thanks everyone for the encouragement. Downloaded JMRI software last night so will start digging into that next.
And Steve, this is a dedicated NCE DCC forum based in your part of the world https://groups.io/g/NCE-DCC
Sounds like your into the dcc now ! With the Powercab, a Procab, 5 amp booster, USB port and JMRI, you are well and truly on your way ! There are some very clever people here that will help you along your journey if you ever get stuck. Just remember, always ask if you're not sure ! Cheers, Gary.
