The bridge is coming along nicely Gormo.

The hot wire cutter looks the goods as well. I like the idea of a smaller cutter for fine tuning the polystyrene.

    Cheers, Gary.

    Thanks Gary,

As usual....there`s lots of info on the net on how to make these things, so I`ll pinch some ideas from everybody and see how it turns out.

Just catching up - great video, and the bridge is coming on leaps and bounds.

One question - please define "a bit parky" as I know it's mid winter in your neck of the woods, and its the height of summer here with a swealtering 13C, so I'm expecting to hear that the temp is sub zero :avatar:

    Thanks Paul,

A bit parky...........a term used to indicate that the temperature and or the weather was somewhat cold.

The place where you live and the place where I live cannot be compared on temperature alone.

I am convinced that humidity plays an even bigger role in how we feel in regards to temperature.

UK and Scotland are far more humid than Australia based on my own personal experience.

I would compare 16C in Edinburgh on a Summers day to possibly 22C in Sydney on a similar day.

We live in a very dry climate by comparison and that seems to be making a considerable difference to how we cope with temperature.

When in London we were experiencing 30C to 34C......it was oppressive.....I kid you not.

At home I`ve been out in the shed in over 40C and felt more comfortable than I did in London.

Australians will laugh when I say it was hot at 34C, but they have no idea what it was really like. They too would find it oppressive because the Brits don`t use aircon much either and there`s no refuge from it.

But back to cold......we are getting down to 1, 2 and 3 overnight here in the West I think.??? The days are coming up to 18`s. There is snow on the southern alps and the wind is blowing that air up to Sydney as usual. The air is cold because it is dry.......even at 18C it feels cool. We are getting frost some mornings.

Our tolerance to cold is not like you folk in Scotland but there you are????.....you settle into patterns of weather where you live and your blood thins or thickens accordingly to suit that climate.

We will never achieve the cold weather you guys have and personally, I say praise the Lord for that.!!!!

    Cheers
    Gormo

This morning it was a balmy 2*C when I left for work...

    Gormo,

I agree with you regard summer temps in the UK. That was my experience when living there, it seems everything is set up to cope with winter. I went shopping and the movies for the air conditioning.

Although, i was able run around in the sun all afternoon and not get burnt

Re: styrofoam cutter - high or low E string or what gauge guitar string.

Just a thought for you re: guitar strings. Have you considered using Elixirs? They cost a little more yet last a lot longer. Ive got a set on my Maton that are approx 12 months old - still sound bright and not rusty

The bridge looks good, I am in the process of constructing mine.

I've been surprised how quickly I've adapted to the cold in the U.K...

Been over in the Spring time, and at under 10c I'd be out and about in a t-shirt, compared to here in Australia where I'll have a jacket zipped up in the same temperature.

    :gday: Folks,

Well as Billy Connolly says " There`s no such thing as bad weather, you`ve just got the wrong clothes "

Wherever we are in the world, we are at odds with the weather.

Cameron....the E is the little one next to the B. I got some Nichrome wire this arvo from Jaycar.....that sounds like code when you read it back.....Nichrome is resistance wire and is probably more suitable than the guitar string.......$3.95 for 4 metres....cheap enough.

I am currently working on a new design for a hot wire cutter which I may put up as a separate thread in the next couple of days.

    Yes please Gormo,
I tried making one the other day using my old train transformer as a power source... the regulated DC outputs that go to the track in normal circumstances, it buzzed its "short circuit" warning at me so I desisted. Probably because I was using some highly conductive copper wire as the cutter wire. No resistance, no heat.... and a short circuit.
Nichrome wire eh? There is a Jaycar just around the corner from my work.
    cheers
    Marty

    :gday: Train Buffs,

I`ve put in a concerted effort over the last couple of days to get this bridge mostly complete.

We`re off away again shortly to see my daughter for about a week, so I don`t want to leave this as an unfinished project once more.

Last night I made up 15 "I" beams and some wall capping to follow on from internal brick walls which were done yesterday also.

The internal brick walls / spacers for the girder plates fitted

Then sprayed the "I" beams....there are three different lengths.

Sprayed the girder plates and cover strips and wall capping

Next task was to fit the "I" beams under the bridge

Next came the girder plates and cover strips

Then the bridge was fitted to it`s location and the wall caps were added.

The "I" beams actually add some rigidity to the road bed but they are really only visible from track level.

And finally, just slipping the background in again to see if it looks right.

The next stage is some paving on at least one side of the bridge, some line markings I think would be appropriate, smoke deflectors and some advertising signs down at platform level and maybe some graffiti ??????. I will also black the end of the bridge on the outside edge of the baseboard and add some rust etc....weathering all over as well.

So folks I`m down to the little detail items.....the hard yards are done....Yyyyiippeeeee!!!!!!

Think graffiti is very much period dependent.

I can remember in the 60s you just got 'ban the bomb' signs everywhere.

    Brilliant bridge Gormo :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

What a great construction Gormo. You said the I beams are only visible from track level but when you are taking photos or videos I am sure they will show up and that's when all the hard work will really pay off.

Thanks fellas for your nice comments,

It`s funny you know????.....I`ve just rocked in back home from a 60`s themed party. There was lots of long hair wigs and peace signs, but most of them didn`t actually get it right because they weren`t even born during that period.

I tend to agree with the fact that the grafitti and peace signs came late in the decade and as such that makes my job a lot easier.

Advertising signs will be the order of the day and that will do...

The "I" beams are not easily noticed but if they were not there it would bug me.....so Steve, I agree with you. Once the camera car does a run under there and they show up on the video, the effort required to put them in will be repaid.

    G`day Folks,

The bridge is finished except maybe for possibly adding some people on the pathway.....but that`s it done....finished....caput!!!!

Railway posters have been added to the platform piers

A single pavement has also been added to the right hand side of the bridge and some lines on the roadway. The lines were added using a white water colour pencil. The pencil was used dry....no water on this surface please..!!!

And some vehicles of course. They are just placed on the bridge. I don`t like gluing them down in case I change my mind later on or if I want to weather them slightly etc.etc. etc.

Now when I got to the end of the bridge with the white lines I had to make a decision. Carry on with the lines straight up the middle of the bridge to the end, or take a punt and try and match it up with the back scene. I used a spare piece of roadway paper that I had left over and drew some lines on it and overlaid it to see what it looked like. I wasn`t happy with the lines going straight to the end, it looked like the two roads were offset. I feel this is the better option here below which ends the straight line before the end of the bridge and then we do a curved line to find the center of the road in the back scene. I then drew a freehand line up the center of the road in the back scene, as it didn`t have one originally.

I will also have some model trees on each of the outside ends of the bridge where it meets the back scene. That will help explain the shadows on the back scene roadway.

So there we are folks......another small step for Gormo which allows me to move forward further up the line with some scenery. The next developments will happen rather more quickly I hope.??

    More as it happens
