Went into our local Toolzone (that's the make on the packet anyway) and found a very nice Butane Pencil Torch. It's a mini blowtorch which runs on lighter fuel. It was £4.99. Could be useful for small jobs and adding extra heat when you may need it. At less than a Fiver it can't be all bad.

Probably something to do with the molecular structure.

Its called annealing, with non ferrous you can cool it by dunking it in water, with ferrous you need to let it air cool otherwise it goes brittle due to the way the microstructure is changed.
So if you want to bend steel easier heat it up but let it cool naturally, non ferrous can be dunked or left to cool.
