Just received another of the "Golden Arrow Models" kits today, that of the SR/BR Maunsell "Q" Class. I already have a suitable RTR 'donor' chassis, together with a further RTR chassis for another G. A. kit, that of the E1/D1. These kits use Hornby 4f and 2f chassis, and I also have the new (and cheap) Hornby 'Jinty' loco which will provide the chassis for a SR/BR "02" Class kit in due course. I'm really getting into this 'kit loco's' building, so many (kit) loco's, so little time!:avatar::avatar::avatar:

Check out my GT3 build thread Paul. I'm always up for something different.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one too, Keith. I bypassed the Golden Arrow kit because I already had an ancient Wills kit bought at a swap meet. That was fitted to a Bachmann split chassis J39 initially and ran very nicely - I ignored the incorrect wheelbase because I cannot build anything that runs better!

I have subsequently fitted a Bachmann 3F chassis but still have to rewire it to fit DCC in the loco.

Mine has an advantage over yours in having a lot more weight already built in, but the disadvantage that the metal body has all sorts of potential to short out and fry any decoders i put in!

I was also considering the "Golden Arrow" "W" Class kit as well Jeff, but apparently the mould is about shafted although "they will attempt a moulding if you are happy to do more cleaning up than usual", so I reckon I'll give it a miss and look at the DJH metal version instead. I already like the look of their "H" Class 'Atlantic', only slight snag is price, by the time you've bought all the extra's like wheels/motor/gearbox etc, you're looking at about £250 a loco. The UK's VAT doesn't help either!

I'd love a W myself, but, like you, decided I didn't want to risk the worn out Golden Arrow model.

Coming back to the Q, it's a funny one: it is a very bland locomotive in appearance, not hugely successful (certainly not in the same league as the entirely different Q1), yet it is considered one of the Southern Railway/Region "must haves". Maybe that explains why the major model manufacturers have never committed to a ready to run Q.

In the meantime, maybe your build will encourage me to finish off the minor electrical rewiring on my model too. It has been sitting to one side for quite a few years now, awaiting the last stages.
