OK ....... We always have Christmas competitions here on platform 1 and this year is no different. I usually announce it earlyish in the year as it tends to be pretty " involved ". This one is for OO gaugers only. So here is what I want you to do ....... Create a cameo with at least two buildings in it. They can be as difficult or as simple as you wish but I'd like to see typical buildings which have been adapted from their original purpose to suit another. A conversion if you like. for example an old platform waiting room into a retail unit or something. Something that has been given a new lease of life. It should take the form of a diorama and should portray some sort of scene or theme. The buildings can be built from whatever you want, maybe a bash of a scalescene kit or a metcalfe or proprietory plastic kit. Even something of your own design from building papers etc. The more original the better. There is no restriction in size or era or location. Its up to you. The usual requirement is in place ...... you must create a thread showing the various stages of the build. a bit of a narrative describing what materials you are using an pictures showing your method as the build progresses. What is up for grabs ........ there is an OO gauge 3000 class Rod , weathered in BR livery with early emblem and ......... a mystery prize. Dont ask what it is as it is a mystery to me at the moment. There will only be one winner. the closing date ( to enable me to try and get it delivered in time for santa coming ) will be Saturday the 1st December at 12 noon UK time. any questions ...... feel free to post them up here. must be your own work one entry per member only Moderators can enter Judge to be announced ( probably me unless I have a volunteer from another mod who aint entering ) you can only enter one christmas competition either in OO gauge or O gauge cheers toto
Count me out.....no interest in the prize, but willing to assist with judging if you need a volunteer. Dave
Hi Dave ........ that would be great. The finish date is 1st December so just keep your eyes and ears open nearer the time. I'll hold you to it. The criteria will be based on quality of modeling, the quality of the thread that has been built up as the build has been progressing and of course the basis of the idea itself. Other points like the innovative use of materials, effort, originality etc. cheers toto
OK ....... I've unraveled the mystery prize ......... Its gonna be a OO gauge rolling road from Rollingrails. I like to order products from suppliers that I myself have used and can vouch for in case of disappointment. I have an O Gauge version which, as per the OO gauge version comes with eight sets of rollers as standard. It is a quality product with very smooth rollers and excellent conductivity of applied power. It is also very robust. It only does OO gauge although in hindsight I should maybe have ordered one of the multi gauge versions OO/P4/EM , too late now its done. So .... there we have it and again the prizes on offer in this competition come courtesy of Platform1. There will be further OO gauge specific competitions doing the rounds quite soon so keep your eyes open for the chance to win more goodies. cheers and good luck Your flounderness ..... toto
I think I may have dropped a clanger too! Two buildings would be scratch built and one a (Dapol) shop made into a forecourt shop. So none are really converted. Toto, when you say "new lease of life", do you mean the original intent of the model kit or real world building has changed use?
Some browsing online plus a rummage in the spares box and I have the start of one of my two repurposed buildings. Are we meant to start a separate thread somewhere or post in this topic? Matt
Hi Matt, Start a separate thread please and state that it's your competition entry in the title. Cheers Toto
Hi Timbersurf, Yes, the function that the building was originally built for has changed. For example ..... a goods shed is now a fabricators workshop. The new purpose would have to be obvious and not just a sign saying Harry's fabrications Ltd. There would have to be some kind of cameo to make the purpose clear like an arc welder at work of steel lifting frames or something. Hope that helps Toto You can either scratch build or adapt a proprietary kit but again, the more work that You put into it, the better chance you have of winning possibly. So a " kit " could be used but I'd consider making some kind of change to it in order to reflect the amou t of work that You have put in. Cheers Toto
Thanks Toto, that's completely scrapped the garage idea, as two of the three buildings would have been purpose built as a show room and a garage workshop. I will have to scratch my brain some more and come up with a new idea! I still don't think you have answered Matt's question though!
Hi Timbersurf and Matt. Apologies. Yes both buildings need to be converted. My thinking was that generally an area will have had a purpose and the facilities ( plural ) will have changed the whole purpose of the area, therefore if there are two buildings, both of them would be turned over to facilitate the new purpose of the general area. I hope that makes sense. Say an engine shed and engine crew mess building being turned into a small fabrication workshop facility and raw materials store or something. Maybe not the best example but that's all part of it. ...... The idea ..... or thought process / inovativeness. Cheers Toto
I've got what I think is a cracker of idea, but I am really reluctant to take on any more projects before Christmas, and it's not even September yet. Having just finished what has suprisingly become my first exhibition layout (thread to come, when I get time, haha) I really don't need any more deadlines. Cheers Tony
