Its next up after I am through with the Ramsbottom 0-4-0 and ..... before I start the Ramsbottom 0-4-2.

everything has its place in the queue ..... :avatar:... as usual with Jims kits , the etches and castings are exceptional.

    you'll love these.

    cheers

I'm just looming at this again and apart from the tumblehome and the fidgity wee handles and hinges .... nothing to it.

Still deciding what I will do for a floor. Brass would be good as you can at least solder any fitting and fixtures to it. I need to think about that as well. What would be inside it .... bunks and a mess facility in two separate compartments.

The full brake version which I have could be a fabrication workshop.

Lots to think about and maybe a few castings to be sourced.

Ordered some 10 thou brass sheet. Should be easy to cut and shape for internal partitioning and maybe even the floor albeit I have thicker stuff for that if needed.

This coach and a full brake shall be the victims. The full brake being a mobile fabrication shop. I see a lathe and press drill coming into play here as well as some sturdy benches and the like.

    More as it happens.

You could always laminate two pieces together if you felt more strength is needed.

I already have some thicker stuff in stock but thought that for the purpose of the internal partitions, 10 thou would be enough. Especially as they will need to be cut and shaped to a reasonable degree. I'll wait and see how rigid it is.

    Cheers

An interesting project Toto, more so as I have the same coaches in my stash. I thought I recognised the brake third as I had bought it at at York show last year!
Might be a parallel build on the cards :scratchchin::avatar:

    No worries,

I'll keep you posted when I intend to start it. Mine might be a little slower as I will be bodging mine. Andddddddddd .... dare I say it ...... I might be deviating from the destructions a bit ....... spells disaster I hear everyone say. :avatar:

My challenge will be getting partition walls and content in place so it may mean one side being kept off along with the roof until the insides are done.

I'll be installing a floor so that should provide the ridigity in the absence of the second side until its nesting completion.

A little bit of a brave move for me anyway but I think its doable.

Now .... his nibs ... Dundee is also making mutterings about buy one as well, albeit it may be a third class compartment coach . Just think ....... a 3 way build. :avatar: There could be some variation in the finished results ..... mine bringing up the rear if you'll excuse the phrase.

    Cheers Pete

I would suggest a different approach.
I would make up the coach as per instructions without the roof and make your floor removable but drill it and fit some 8 or 10 ba nuts so that you can screw it in from underneath. Then you can make up the interior, detail it and paint it while it's outside the coach and then screw it in when the coach is complete.

You will probably have to make it slightly smaller than the space available inside the coach. This is so that it can slip in past the fold down sections at the top of the sides that support the roof but there is plenty of metal folded under supporting the springs and W irons etc so it can be quite a bit smaller without it being noticable from inside or out.

    Hi again Rob,

Initially I had thought of leaving the side off and installing the floor full width in order to give the partition walls something to be soldered to. Also to take cupboards and fittings etc.

If I do this as you have suggested, I could still solder in the partition walls using the sides to take the solder and the tabs that run the length of both sides at floor level. Same with any cupboard units that run around the edges.

This would just leave tools and odd fittings / people etc that could be soldered to the floor and raised up and soldered from underneath.

Dont know if I'm making myself clear but I think your suggestion may work for me.

Things will become clearer once I get started on it and the progress pictures start to flow.

    Cheers

No word on the delivery of the 10 thou brass sheet yet from metal Smith's. So, I have other brass sheets in stock although from memory thicker than what I would have liked so .... in preparation of the completion of my Ramsbottom kit currently under the knife ( awaiting motor and gearbox ) I thi k I will take a couple of critical dimensions for the fabrication of the coach / mess / accommodation floor and start designing out the internal walls etc.

A nice easy task to start getting my head around the amount t of internal space I will have at my disposal.

I wont physically start the build as I think this could turn into a three way build challenge between myself, Pete ( jakesdad ) and Dundee ( Paul l ) who is just in the midst of ordering a full brake coach from Jim as well.

So, a bit of coordination between the 3 of us to agree a start date when we all have the bits we need for our individual builds whether that be built as the intended purpose or in my case a repurpose build.

    Should be a hoot. :avatar:

I ca however start on cutting brass sheet to size for fashioning the inner components out of ( that's not cheating ) ..... is it. :scratchchin:

    Cheers for now

I've been out to the shed for a closer look at this build. Working out how best to divide the space realistically between bunk dormers, welfare and brake compartment.

I'd imagine that these facilities would have been basic. No fitted kitchen units and proper cookers in these days. So some more research required to see what they would have had.

What about toilet facilities ...... :scratchchin: some form of septic tank facility perhaps.

Bunk dormers would be two dormers sleeping two in each dormer in a bunk scenario. Or at least in the absence of evidence..... it will be. Some basic storage facility for hanging clothes and work wear and that would be your lot.

Welfare .... benches with a table and some basic cooking and storage space. If you know better ...... shout out.

Any info on toilets would be appreciated. There must gave been something for remote location working.

Whilst I am waiting the start of the three way build on the coaches with pete and Dundee, I decided to get myself ahead a bit on my departmental build. I need partition walls for this. At least two full width and possibly a half width etch so I made a start cutting out the brass with the new toy .... The Olfa cutting knife ..... a great tool indeed for marking out the cuts on brass sheet.

it is very accurate with its cutting lines.

I'll need to trim / file off a little bit all the way around as the end etches used for taking the shape aree fitted to the outside where these partitions will be inside dimensions. Once I have one fitting correctly, I'll maybe keep it as a template as I can see this being used a few times with othet builds.

    cheers for now
