Apparently, once the washout plugs get slightly worn it's impossible to line them all up no matter OCD you might be.

Mossy, to level out some of the lines, you can apply a small amount of resin to the part with a brush, leave it to self level then cure it. You don't need to fully cure it 30 sec to a min is probably enough to set solid enough for sanding. Then once smooth fully cure it or leave it in the window.

Rob, I've never thought of using resin in that way, something to experiment with, but since Rob's firebox is to high therefore scrap and up in Wensleydale it's not an option in this case, more crucially I need to figure out what went wrong, I suspect a worn out FEP with which the fault didn't show up on small parts but is very obvious on a big print like the firebox. Rob is having to redraw the firebox after which when done I will get the stl and can start fiddling about.

I am still working away at it with not too far to go.

Over on Western Thunder someone questioned whether I was fitting mud hole covers. I didn't add them to the original because they were not on the DA firebox casting, but having checked period photos they were fitted to 6026 during the timeframe that I am depicting so I had a go at adding them.

    Rob,

Are you redrawing both fireboxes or have you decided on which one to concentrate on?

Just the one mate, I haven't 100% decided which way the go with the front ring yet but there will only be the one to reprint. I may need to redraw the lower parts but I won't know that until I have finished the new upper firebox.

Needing a break from the metaphorical drawing board, I decided to make the lamp irons for the footplate.

I milled them from a length of brass bar. Initially I milled a length of angle and then cut slices off with a piercing saw. Then I soldered them edge on to the other end of the bar that I milled them from. Once soldered on, I milled the edges flat. I then turned them over soldered them on again and then milled them down to final size.

They were then finished by hand with a file but I notice from the photos that some of the bases need deburring.

It's nothing to do with being worn out or not :giggle:
Unless you have a bolt and nut (where it is possible to rotate bolt's head to a desired angle before tightening the nut),
any thread being screwed into fixed orientation threaded hole (like your holes in the firebox) will end up randomly orientated.
Usual whizz to get the "right" orientation is to try various thickness of washers until your bolt head ends up where you want it
Clearly this is not something you can do with your washout plugs...

Finally the redraw of the firebox is complete. I ended up redrawing the lower section too because no surprise the existing one didn't match the redrawn main firebox.

At the minute they are all separate bodies and I haven't mirrored the lower firebox yet because I need to work my way through and check all the sizes before I combine the upper firebox into one body and the lower one into two bodies, left and right. It's much easier to make alterations when they are separate.

Amazing stuff Rob... it seems the way to go nowadays with boilers and firebox units with complex curves and angles.

    Rob,

Do the firebox sides actually join directly to the upper firebox or does the foot plate sit between them? If there's a direct connection as well as sending me the 3 stls. left and right lower and upper would you send one with all three bodies combined, it may be another way of printing them.

    Hi Mate,

They fit above and below the footplate so need to be in separate pieces.

Why do you need to combine the parts ?
I do this at the STL stage when exported, thus leaving the model free for further edits ?
Or is Fusion working a little different to 123D Design ?

Good question, it's what I have always done but your right, I can just combine them in the stl it just never occurred to me to do that.

Rob, all my wagons are a stack of parts (I think of them as individual models) from which which I simply chose which parts are required and generate an stl of those.
Leaving aside brake and running gear an open wagon is 5 parts (ends, sides and floor) while wagons are 6, add a roof. I sketch 1/2 an end and side and 1/4 of a floor from which I mirror to create the 5 parts, that way if I find a fault a change to the 1/2 or 1/4 sketches ripples though the others. Saves a huge amount of work.

Further to my post on my MOK 8F thread I also bent the supports on a couple of the irons so that they would fit on the smoke box door of the Princess and the 8F.

    IMG_0003.JPG
Again these need a final clean up with a file.

At the minute I have 20 odd bodies. This does include the second side of the lower firebox which I mirrored last night. each of the lower parts is at the minute 5 separate bodies.

    upload_2023-1-21_9-35-41.png upload_2023-1-21_9-36-20.png

I would normally consolidate them into three bodies, Upper firebox, lower left and and lower right firebox in a similar way to your wagon parts.

Now that’s where I see the gain of fusion over 123design. You can turn on it off certain parts, or edit them separate. So if you decide that one of the wash out plugs wants to be changed, you can, such as turning it.

I think I have around 40 items on my Leek Signal box model when imported to Fusion and coloured for the renders. (Including some items like the light bulbs and glass which wouldn’t be printed and there for the 3D model only)
I’ve never counted the individual bricks… which is a rather sore point at the moment as been reworking the mortar gaps last two nights 2 sides had taken me 3 hrs, only for the file to corrupt, so had to start again.

    Hi Andy,

I must admit I am on version 5 at the minute as I kept 'saving as' so I had a point to go back to if I stuffed it up...
