This motor may be used in other Mainline locos which I do not have, I am unlikely to buy more to find out as these can be quite demanding to achieve a decent running condition in DC let alone DCC. This conversion assumes that the loco is in good running order, many Mainline locos are not even if they have had little use since new. Outlne of Work Required Isolate the motor brushes from the chassis. Motor Modification Very Important - Both brushes must be isolated from track power otherwise the decoder is likely to be destroyed. Remove the motor from the chassis , see the relevent loco conversion if unsure how. The 'fingers' circled in red are what connects the brush retaining arms to the chassis. These are easily bent upwards. So they can be cropped off near the screw head. When it comes to attaching a decoder the motor drive wires can be easily soldered to the arms between the screw heads and the brush holder Summary An easy motor type to modify for use with DCC, some loco specific conversions follow. Good luck with that one Jim, Personally, I stay away from Mainline these days. I still have a couple in running order, but for how long is a good question.? Gormo
Hi Gormo, very sensible too Unfortunately I am not sensible, I have already converted a few, more in progress, some okay, others have taken more effort to restore to good DC running than the actual DCC conversion, others converted easily and have insufficient traction to be of much use, all will be revealed shortly. I reckon the time I spend on converting these is more than the run time they will actually get My DCC Conversions index covers those I am working on and will be written up, for better or worse in the next month or so.
