Dear all, please find a link to my Flickr album for "Deer Valley Vegetables". https://www.flickr.com/photos/66383491@N06/albums/72157676851243343
Inspired by the case label found on the Internet, I realised that the APA box from the outside was approximately the same size and shape as a vegetable case. The layout was started a few years ago, and I have only just gotten back to work on it.
The backstory is that Deer Valley vegetables is a huge Arizona concern, and that it is served by 18 inch industrial trams. Locos are a mix of Brookvilles, converted tractors and other beasts. The buildings are pieced together from O scale IHC houses (a favourite source of building bits, and inexpensive when I bought some). I made the decals myself using Bare Metal Foil decal paper on my Epson Inkjet, well-sealed with dullcote.
The buildings and signs look a bit raw now, but all will be weathered to reflect long exposure and somewhat minimal maintenance. The layout will be shown with Amper Sand, my On18 Pizza layout at the Thornleigh NSW Model Railway Exhibition on the June Long Weekend. I love exhibiting micros as they are easy to transport, carry, set up, run and take down!

Another nice little micro Geoff I really like the APA box concept.

Did you stock up on APA box or have you found a place that sells them.?
I got one did I diorama in it, then though next time I'm at IKEA I'll get a few only to be told that they had removed them as a line in Australian IKEAs two weeks earlier and all old stock had been shipped out. Bugger

Thanks Chris,I had been meaning to stock up on APA boxes as well, and unfortunately was financially challenged at the time I wanted to get a few.I have the Deer Valley one and a spare, but that is all unfortunately.I keep hassling IKEA to reintroduce the APA box, to no avail.:confused:cheersGeoff

The On18 Deer Valley Vegetables is getting close to being completed after several years off-and-on modelling. This APA box layout has been a challenge to get to a stage where I am now happy with the scenery. The low-relief buildings were originally very low relief, and I couldn't get the feeling of depth I preferred. I increased the depth of the buildings, bringing them forward in the layout to hide the curves at each end better. I completely redid the grass, weathered the buildings and signs, and built raised vegetable garden beds. Now all that remains is some final detailing with fruit boxes etc. add a scarecrow, weather engines and cars and that is it. Deer Valley Vegetables will be on show at the Thornleigh NSW Exhibition on the June Long Weekend.

On18 looks like it would lend itself well to a Queensland sugar cane train layout. It looks great, Geoff. Also looking forward to seeing it at Thornleigh!

    Chris,
    I found this on ebayhttp://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Wooden-Toy-Storage-Unit-Chest-Box-Childrens-Toys-Boxes-Tidy-Room-Bedroom-Xmas-/401222491484?hash=item5d6ab95d5c:g:zjQAAOSwXeJYIh~U
Great for UK modellers, but the postage price to AU kind of makes it a no go for modellers in OZ.I have one more APA up my sleeve. It may end up as a Gn15 layout.cheersGeoff

Dear all, the very largely complete Deer Valley Vegetables layout in On18 was displayed last weekend at the Thornleigh Model Railway Exhibition, along with my other On18 layout Amper Sand. Response to both layouts was excellent, with many converts to microlayouts coming out of the woodwork. Photographs covering the project from ealy days to near completion can be seen at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/66383491@N06/albums/72157676851243343 I am very pleased with how this little layout looks and performs, now on to the next microlayout! regards Geoff Potter
